Translation

✧ The march of al-Muʿtaḍid to Mārdīn and his taking possession of it In the year two hundred and eighty-one, with six nights remaining of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, al-Muʿtaḍid set out on the second expedition to Mosul, aiming for Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn, because he had learned that Ḥamdān had inclined toward Hārūn al-Shārī and had called for him. When the Arabs and Kurds learned of al-Muʿtaḍid’s march, they swore to fight to the last drop of blood, gathered, and arrayed their forces. Al-Muʿtaḍid rode against them with a light cavalry force, fell upon them, killed some of them, and many of them drowned in the Zāb. Al-Muʿtaḍid then marched to Mosul, intending the citadel of Mārdīn, which belonged to Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn. Ḥamdān fled from it, leaving his son in it. Al-Muʿtaḍid besieged it and fought those inside it that day. The next morning, al-Muʿtaḍid rode up to the gate of the citadel and shouted, “O son of Ḥamdān!” The son answered him, and he said, “Open the gate.” So he opened it, and al-Muʿtaḍid sat at the gate and ordered that what was in the citadel be removed and that it be demolished. He then sent after Ibn Ḥamdūn, who was pursued with the utmost effort, and some of his wealth was seized. Al-Muʿtaḍid later captured him after his return to Baghdādh. On his return he headed for al-Ḥasaniyyah, where there was a Kurdish man named Shaddād with a large army, said to have been ten thousand men, and who had a citadel. Al-Muʿtaḍid seized him and demolished his citadel.
