Translation

✧ The building of the Abode of the Caliphate in Baghdad The first to build it was al-Muʿtaḍid in the year two hundred and eighty. He was the first of the caliphs to reside in it until the end of their dynasty. It was originally a residence of al-Ḥasan b. Sahl, known as al-Qaṣr al-Ḥasanī. Then it passed after that to his daughter Būrān, whom al-Maʾmūn married. She made improvements in it until al-Muʿtaḍid asked her to vacate it, and she responded to that. Then she repaired what had deteriorated in it and restored what had become dilapidated therein, and furnished in every place thereof what was suitable of furnishings, and housed therein what befitted it of slave-girls and servants, and prepared therein appetizing foods and what was good to store in that time. Then she sent its keys to al-Muʿtaḍid. When he entered it, what he saw therein of good things bewildered him. Then he enlarged it and added to it and made a wall around it, and it was the size of the city of Shīrāz. He built the maydān, then built a palace overlooking the Tigris, then al-Muktafī built the Tāj. Then came the days of al-Muqtadir, and he added to it very great additions, and its traces lasted until the days of the Tatars who destroyed Baghdad and took captive the free, secure women who were in it, as will be explained in its place under the year six hundred and fifty-six. Al-Khaṭīb said: It seems likely that Būrān handed over the Abode of the Caliphate to al-Muʿtamid, for she did not live until the days of al-Muʿtaḍid.
