Translation

✧ The Death of Naṣr al-Sāmānī In the year two hundred and seventy-nine, Naṣr b. Aḥmad al-Sāmānī died. Sāmān had been with Abū Muslim, the master of the daʿwah, and he was the ancestor of the Sāmānids. He claimed descent from the Chosroes and said that he was of the progeny of Bahrām b. Ardashīr b. Sābūr. He died, leaving his son Asad. His son Asad was among the retinue of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Māhān when al-Rashīd appointed him over Khurasan. Asad died during his governorship, leaving Nūḥ, Aḥmad, Yaḥyā, and Ilyās. Aḥmad b. Asad governed Farghānah, Nūḥ governed Samarqand, Yaḥyā b. Asad governed al-Shāsh and Ushrūsanah, and Ilyās governed Herat. Aḥmad was the best of them in conduct. He held office during the governorship of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir and then died, leaving seven sons. He entrusted his affairs to his son Naṣr, so his son Naṣr b. Aḥmad took over what his father had held of Samarqand, al-Shāsh, and Farghānah, while his brother Ismāʿīl governed Bukhara and its dependencies. These are called the Sāmānids. Naṣr b. Aḥmad died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year in Samarqand. He was a man of letters and of merit. He composed fine poetry, among which is what he said about Rāfiʿ b. Harthamah: Your brother, in you, is known and recognized; indeed, the abased is abased wherever he may be. Were it not for a treacherous age in its turns and a dynasty that wronged, you would not have been a mere man.
