And at the door of Abū al-Walīd there were a crowd of people, among them Abū Zurʿah and those below him. My purpose was only that someone would present to me what I had not heard, so that they would say: It is with so-and-so, and then I would go and hear it. Wathīq, and others. He had heard from about five hundred shaykhs but narrated only a little. He died in Shaʿbān of this year. And there is another called Muḥammad b. Saʿdān al-Bazzāz, but he is an obscure shaykh; he narrated from al-Qaʿnabī. And a third called Muḥammad b. Saʿdān al-Naḥwī; he is well-known, and we have mentioned him in the year two hundred and thirty-one. Among the notables who died in this year: Abū Isḥāq al-Kūfī, judge Abū Isḥāq al-Kūfī, judge of Baghdad after Ibn Samāʿah. He heard [hadith from] Yaʿlā b. ʿUbayd and others, and from him narrated Ibn Abī al-Dunyā and others. He died at the age of ninety-three. He was trustworthy, virtuous, devout, and upright. Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā Abū Saʿīd al-Kharrāz Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā. Abū Saʿīd al-Kharrāz, one of the famous Sufis renowned for worship, spiritual struggle, scrupulousness, and self-vigilance. He has works on that subject, and he had charismatic gifts, spiritual states, endurance of hardships, and constriction of circumstances. He narrated from Ibrāhīm b. Bashshār, the companion of Ibrāhīm b. Adham, and others. From him narrated ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Miṣrī and a group. Among his excellent sayings is his statement—may God have mercy on him: When the eyes of those who fear weep, they have written to God with their tears. And his saying: Well-being conceals both the righteous and the wicked, but when affliction comes, then men are distinguished. And his saying: Any inward state contradicted by outward behavior is false. And his saying: Occupying oneself with a past moment is wasting the present moment. And his saying: The sins of those brought near are the good deeds of the righteous. And he said: Contentment before the decree is surrender; contentment with the decree is submission. Al-Bayhaqī transmitted with his chain of narration to him that he was asked about the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: Hearts are naturally disposed to love those who do good to them. He said: How strange is one who sees no benefactor other than God—how can he not incline to Him with his entire being?! I say: This hadith is not sound, but his comment on it is better. His son Saʿīd said: I asked my father for a dāniq of silver. He said: My son, be patient, for if your father wished kings to ride to his door, they would not refuse. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from him that he said: Once I was struck by severe hunger, and I thought of asking God for food, but I said to myself: This contradicts trust in God. Then I thought of asking Him for patience, when a voice called out to me, saying: He claims that he is near to us, And that we do not lose anyone who comes to us; He asks us for hospitality in hardship, and for patience, As if we do not see him and he does not see us. He said: So I rose and walked for parasangs without provisions. Abū Saʿīd al-Kharrāz said: The lover consoles himself with everything for his beloved and is not consoled by anything away from him; he follows his traces and does not cease inquiring about him. Then he recited: I ask you about her—is there any informer? For after our Makkah I have no knowledge of Nuʿmā. If only I knew where her people pitched their tents, And which of God's lands they intended when they departed, Then we would follow the path of the wind behind her, Even if Nuʿmā were beyond the stars. His death was in this year. It is also said: in the year two hundred and forty-seven. And it is said: in the year two hundred and eighty-six. The first is more correct. Yaʿqūb b. Yūsuf b. Maʿqil al-Umawī and Yaʿqūb b. Yūsuf b. Maʿqil al-Umawī, their client, father of Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad al-Aṣamm. Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā al-Barmakī. Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān b. Jawān, the imam al-Fasawī. Ibn al-Athīr said in his Kāmil: And in this year died Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān b. Jawān, the imam al-Fasawī, and he had Shīʿī leanings. As for Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān b. Jawān. He is Abū Yūsuf b. Abī Muʿāwiyah al-Fārisī al-Fasawī. He heard a great deal of hadith and narrated from more than a thousand trustworthy shaykhs, among them Hishām b. ʿAmmār, Duḥaym, Abū al-Jumāhir, Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—the Damascenes—Saʿīd b. Manṣūr, Abū ʿĀṣim, Makkī b. Ibrāhīm, Sulaymān b. Ḥarb, Muḥammad b. Kathīr, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Mūsā, and al-Qaʿnabī. From him narrated al-Nasāʾī in his Sunan, Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd, al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān, Ibn Khirāsh, Ibn Khuzaymah, Abū ʿAwānah al-Isfarāyīnī, and a host of others. He compiled the book al-Tārīkh wa-l-Maʿrifah and other useful and beneficial books. He traveled in pursuit of hadith to distant lands and was away from his homeland for about thirty years. Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from him that he said: I used to write at night by the light of a lamp during the time of travel. One night, something fell on my eyes and I could no longer see the lamp. I began to weep over the loss of my sight and what I would miss because of that—the writing of the hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ—and over my exile. Then sleep overcame me and I slept, and I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ in a dream. He said: What is the matter with you? I complained to him of my exile and of what I had missed of writing the sunnah. He said: "Come near me." So I came near him, and he placed his hand on my eyes and began as if reciting something from the Qur'an. Then I woke up and could see, and I sat down glorifying God. Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī and al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Naysābūrī praised him, and the latter said: He is the imam of the people of hadith in Fārs. He came to Naysābūr and our shaykhs heard from him. Some have attributed Shīʿī leanings to him. Ibn ʿAsākir mentioned that Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth, the ruler of Fārs, heard that he spoke against ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, so he ordered him to be brought. His vizier said to him: O emir, he does not speak against our shaykh ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān al-Sijzī; he speaks against ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān the Companion. He said: Leave him alone; what have I to do with the Companions? I only thought he was speaking against our shaykh ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān al-Sijzī. I say: I do not think this is authentically reported from Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān, for he is an imam and a traditionist of great stature. His death occurred one month before Abū Ḥātim, in Rajab of this year, in Basra, may God have mercy on him. One of them saw him in a dream and said: What did your Lord do with you? He said: He forgave me and commanded me to dictate hadith in heaven as I used to dictate it on earth. So I sat to dictate in the fourth heaven, and around me sat a group of angels, among them Gabriel, writing what I dictated of hadith with pens of gold. ʿUrayb the singer, the Maʾmūniyyah ʿUrayb the singer, the Maʾmūniyyah; it is said that she was the daughter of... And as for ʿUrayb al-Maʾmūniyyah. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir gave her biography in his “Tārīkh” and related a statement of some of them that she was the daughter of Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā b. Khālid al-Barmakī, who was stolen while she was young at the time of the fall of the Barāmika dynasty and sold; then al-Maʾmūn b. al-Rashīd bought her. Then he related from Ḥammād b. Isḥāq, from his father, that he said: I have never seen a woman with a more beautiful face, more refined in manners, singing, lute-playing, poetry, chess, and backgammon than her. You would not wish to find any excellent, remarkable, outstanding quality in a woman but you would find it in her. She was an accomplished poet, eloquent and articulate. Al-Maʾmūn was passionately in love with her, then after him al-Muʿtaṣim loved her, while she was passionately in love with a man called Muḥammad b. Ḥāmid; she would sometimes bring him into her residence in the caliphal palace, may God disgrace her, as Ibn ʿAsākir mentioned about her in his “Tārīkh.” Then she fell in love with Ṣāliḥ al-Mundhirī and married him secretly. She used to compose poetry about him, and sometimes she would sing it before al-Mutawakkil without him realizing about whom it was, and his slave-girls would laugh at that. She would say: O lesbians, this is better than your practice. Ibn ʿAsākir cited much of her poetry. Among it is what she said when she entered upon al-Mutawakkil to visit him during a fever that had afflicted him: They came to me and said the caliph has an illness, so I said, while the fire of longing blazed in my breast: Would that I had the fever of the caliph Jaʿfar, so the fever would be in me and the reward would be his. It is enough sorrow that if it is said he was fevered and I did not die of grief, for after this I am one of endurance. I am made a ransom for the caliph Jaʿfar, and that is little thanks from me for the caliph. When he recovered, she entered upon him and sang to him from her own composition: Thanks for the favors of Him who restored you from sickness; may you remain protected from pains and illness. Through your light the days regained their splendor, and the plants of the meadows of generosity and nobility shook with joy. After al-Muṣṭafā no king has arisen for the faith more chaste than you nor more faithful to covenants. May God preserve Jaʿfar among us and dispel through the light of his Sunnah the darkness of shadows. She also said on his recovery: We praised Him who restored the caliph Jaʿfar, in spite of the elders of error and unbelief. He was only like a full moon that suffered a brief eclipse, then the full moon shone clear again. His well-being is might and strength for the faith, and his illness is a breaker of the faith’s back. You fell ill and made all creation ill, and the lands darkened from the severity of the outcry. When people perceived your recovery, they recovered, having been like sleepers on embers. The well-being of our world is the well-being of Jaʿfar, so may he remain protected and sound to the end of time: An imam who encompasses people with excellence and piety, near to godliness, far from sin. She has many refined and surpassing poems, and in what we have mentioned there is sufficient. God is the granter of success to what is right. Ibn ʿAsākir said: I have heard that she was born in the year 181 AH and died in the year 277 AH at Surra man raʾā, being ninety-six years old. Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Muthannā al-Mawṣilī. In this year Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Muthannā al-Mawṣilī died. He related many ḥadīths and was among the people of truthfulness and trustworthiness.
