Translation
✧ Mention of the notable figures who died in the year 269 AH Ibrāhīm b. Naṣr b. Muḥammad b. Naṣr, Abū Isḥāq al-Kindī He heard ʿAffān b. Muslim and Qabīṣah, among others. He was trustworthy (thiqa), and he died in this year. Ibrāhīm b. Munqidh b. Ibrāhīm, [Abū Isḥāq] al-ʿUṣfurī One of the companions of Ibn Wahb. He narrated from al-Minqarī and Idrīs b. Yaḥyā. His books were burned, but a remnant of them remained, so he narrated from what remained of them. He was trustworthy and approved. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Khālid b. Aḥmad b. Khālid b. ʿAmr b. Mujālid b. Mālik, Abū al-Haytham al-Dhuhlī, the emir He held the governorship of Marw, Herat, and other parts of Khurasan. Then he held the governorship of Bukhara and resided there. He had well-known monuments and praiseworthy deeds. He loved hadith and would say: "I spent more than a million dirhams in seeking knowledge." He had heard from Ibn Rāhūyah, ʿAlī b. Ḥujr, and many others. When he settled in Bukhara, he brought to his presence the hadith masters (ḥuffāẓ), such as Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī, Ṣāliḥ Jazarah, and Naṣr b. Aḥmad al-Baghdādī, and others. Naṣr compiled a musnad for him. He used to go out with these named individuals to the hadith transmitters. He would walk wearing a cloak and sandals, humbling himself thereby. He extended his hands in benevolence to the people of knowledge, so they surrounded him and came to him from all horizons. He wanted Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī to come to his presence, but he refused. So he found fault with him regarding the wording (al-lafẓ), and expelled him [from Bukhara]. Al-Bukhārī died in a village. It was as if he was punished for what he did to al-Bukhārī, for his rule came to an end. He had come to Baghdad and narrated hadith. From him heard Wakīʿ the judge, Abū Ṭālib the ḥāfiẓ, and Ibn ʿUqdah. Then the sultan detained him and imprisoned him in Baghdad, and he died in prison in this year. The cause was that he was harsh on the Ẓāhiriyyah and inclined toward Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth, the ruler in Sijistān, and that was the cause of his imprisonment. 1746 - Dhū al-Kifl al-Zāhid A man from the descendants of Miskīn b. al-Ḥārith, known as Abū al-Qāsim. Narrating from him: Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ḥajjāj b. Rushdīn and others. He died in Egypt in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, Abū Ḥamzah al-Ṣūfī al-Baghdādī A client (mawlā) of ʿĪsā b. Abān the judge, one of the major Sufi shaykhs. He used to speak in the mosque of al-Ruṣāfah, then moved to the mosque of the city. He was learned in the readings (qirāʾāt), especially the reading of Abū ʿAmr. He sat with Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. Whenever a question arose, Aḥmad would say: "What do you say about it, O Sufi?" He sat with Bishr b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Naṣr al-Tammār, and Sarī al-Saqaṭī. He traveled with Abū Turāb al-Nakhshabī. However, he immersed himself in the doctrines of the Sufis, until it is narrated that he fell into a well, and some people passed by and began to fill it in. He considered it part of tawakkul (trust in God) not to speak, but his silence in such a case is contrary to the Sacred Law. It has been said that the one who fell into the well was Abū Ḥamzah al-Khurāsānī, not al-Baghdādī, and God knows best. Abū Saʿīd al-Ziyādī said: Abū Ḥamzah was the teacher (ustādh) of the Baghdādīs. He was the first to speak in Baghdad about these doctrines—of purity of remembrance (ṣafāʾ al-dhikr), concentration of aspiration (jamʿ al-hamm), love (maḥabbah), longing (shawq), nearness (qurb), and intimacy (uns). No one preceded him in speaking publicly to the people in Baghdad. He continued to enjoy good standing among the people until he died in the year 269 AH. He was buried at Bāb al-Kūfah. Al-Sulamī mentioned that he died in the year 289 AH, but the former is more correct. Muḥammad b. al-Khalīl b. ʿĪsā, Abū Jaʿfar al-Makhramī He heard ʿUbayd Allāh b. Mūsā, Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah, Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad, and others. Narrating from him: Wakīʿ the judge, Muḥammad b. Mukhallad, and others. He was trustworthy, one of the best of people. He died in Shaʿbān of this year. Aḥmad b. Mujālid, a client of al-Muʿtaṣim In this year died Aḥmad b. Mujālid, a client of al-Muʿtaṣim. He was one of the propagandists (duʿāt) of the Muʿtazilah, and he took kalām from Jaʿfar b. Mubashshir. Sulaymān b. Ḥafṣ b. Abī ʿUṣfūr al-Ifrīqī In this year died Sulaymān b. Ḥafṣ b. Abī ʿUṣfūr al-Ifrīqī. He was a Muʿtazilī who held the createdness of the Qurʾān. He wanted [to impose it on] the people of al-Qayrawān, but they surrendered to that. He accompanied Bishr al-Marīsī, Abū al-Hudhayl, and other Muʿtazilīs. In this year died: ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh b. al-Salīl al-Shaybānī, the deputy of Armenia and Diyār Bakr. And Abū Farwah Yazīd b. Muḥammad al-Ruhāwī, one of the weak narrators.
