✧ Mention of several events In al-Muḥarram of this year, the Bedouin cut the road against a caravan of pilgrims between Thawr and Sumayrāʾ, and they robbed them and drove off about five thousand camels with their loads and many people. In it, the moon was eclipsed and set while eclipsed, and the sun was also eclipsed in it at the end of the day and set while eclipsed, so two eclipses came together in al-Muḥarram. In it, in Ṣafar, the common people rose up against Ibrāhīm al-Khalījī and plundered his house. The reason for that was that a servant of his shot a woman with an arrow and killed her. The sultan sought redress against him, but he refused, and his servants shot at the people. They killed a group and wounded others, so the common people rose up against them. They killed two men of the sultan's companions among them and plundered his residence and his animals. He fled, so Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir—who was the deputy of his father—gathered Ibrāhīm's animals and what had been taken from him and returned it to him. In it, an army was sent against Abū al-Sāj after he returned from Makkah. He dispatched it to Jeddah, and it seized two ships belonging to al-Makhzūmī containing money and weapons. In it, Khalaf, the companion of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, rose up in the Syrian frontier fortresses, where his governor was Yāzmān the eunuch, the client of Mufliḥ b. Khāqān. He imprisoned him, but a group rose up against him and rescued Yāzmān, and Khalaf fled and abandoned the prayer for Ibn Ṭūlūn. Ibn Ṭūlūn marched against them and encamped at Adhana, so the people of Ṭarsūs fortified themselves there, with Yāzmān among them. Ibn Ṭūlūn returned from them to Ḥimṣ, then to Damascus, and stayed there. In it, Rāfiʿ b. Harthama took over the cities of Khurasan that al-Khujustānī had seized, and he collected the land tax from several districts of Khurasan for more than ten years in advance, impoverishing and ruining their people. In it, there was a battle among the Ḥasanīs, the Ḥusaynīs (in the Ḥijāz), and the Jaʿfarīs. Eight men of the Jaʿfarīs were killed, and they rescued al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās al-ʿAbbāsī, the governor of al-Madīnah. In it, in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, Hārūn b. al-Muwaffaq appointed Ibn Abī al-Sāj over al-Anbār, the Euphrates route, and al-Raḥbah. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad was appointed over al-Kūfah and its environs. He met Muḥammad al-Hayṣam al-ʿIjlī, and al-Hayṣam was defeated. In it, ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh b. al-Salīl al-Shaybānī died, while Armenia and Diyār Bakr were in his hands. In it, there was a battle between Ibn Abī al-Sāj and the Bedouin, and they defeated him. Then he made a night attack on them, killing and capturing some of them, and he sent the heads and the captives to Baghdad. In it, in Shawwāl, Ibn Abī al-Sāj entered al-Raḥbah of Mālik b. Ṭawq after its people fought him [and he defeated them] and killed them. Aḥmad b. Mālik b. Ṭawq fled to Syria. Then Ibn Abī al-Sāj marched to Qarqīsiyā and entered it. Hārūn b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Hāshimī led the people in the pilgrimage. (In it, Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl, the emir of Sicily, went out with an army to the area of Ramṭah, and the army reached Qaṭāniyah, killing many of the Byzantines, taking captives and booty. Then he returned to Balarm in Dhū al-Ḥijjah.) The order was given in this year to address Ṣāʿid by the kunyah "al-ʿAlāʾ" in letters, and he was appointed over lands. Ṣāʿid went down to al-Muwaffaq, leaving his son al-ʿAlāʾ as his deputy. Ṣāʿid was named "the holder of two vizierates." They had resolved to name him "the holder of two managements." Abū ʿUbayd Allāh told them: "Do not name him with something that belongs to him alone, but name him 'the holder of two vizierates' or 'the holder of two sufficiencies,' so that it is attributed to you." So they named him "the holder of two vizierates." Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī narrated, saying: al-Muʿallā b. Ṣāʿid related to me, saying: They slandered Ṣāʿid before al-Muwaffaq and guaranteed him with a great sum of money. They placed the note under the tail of a bird and released it. My father had disapproved of something from al-Muwaffaq, so he resolved to carry to him two hundred thousand dirhams that he had with him. Then he said: "By God, I will not do it, and I will give a hundred thousand dirhams of it in charity." He did that on the morning of that day when he boarded a boat. While he was traveling, a bird fell into his boat. It was caught, and a note was found in it. Ṣāʿid read it, and behold, it was a slander against him. He knew that God Almighty had sufficed him because of his charity. He entered to al-Muwaffaq and showed him the bird and the note, and informed him of what he had done. So he became great in his eyes, and his standing with him became exalted. Al-Muwaffaq said: "God has not done this to you except for a good that He singled out for you."
