Translation
✧ The war between the Kharijites in the land of al-Mawṣil In the year 267 AH, there took place between Hārūn al-Khārijī and Muḥammad b. Khurrazād—who was also one of the Kharijites—a battle at Baʿdarā, in the districts of al-Mawṣil. The reason for that is that we have already mentioned, under the year 263 AH, the war that broke out between Hārūn and Muḥammad after the death of Musāwir. Now, Muḥammad b. Khurrazād gathered his companions and marched against Hārūn to fight him. He encamped at Wāsiṭ, a quarter near al-Mawṣil. He used to ride an ox so that he would not flee from battle, and he wore coarse wool and patched his clothes. He was given to much worship and asceticism, and would sit on the ground with nothing between him and it. When he encamped at Wāsiṭ, the notables of the people of al-Mawṣil came out to him. Hārūn was at Maʿlathāyā, gathering forces to fight Muḥammad. When he heard of Muḥammad's encampment near al-Mawṣil, he marched against him, and Ibn Khurrazād moved toward him. They met near the village of Shamrakh and fought a fierce battle in which there was single combat and many charges. Hārūn was routed, and about two hundred of his men were killed, including a group of famous horsemen. Hārūn fled, crossed the Tigris to the west, making for the Banū Taghlib, who supported him and gathered around him. Ibn Khurrazād returned whence he had come, and Hārūn went back to al-Ḥadītha, where many people joined him. He wrote to Ibn Khurrazād's companions and won them over, so that many of them came to him. Only Ibn Khurrazād's own clan, the Shamardaliyya, who were from the people of Shahrazūr, remained with him. His companions left him only because he lived harshly, and he was in the land of Shahrazūr, a region full of enemies, such as the Kurds and others. Hārūn, in the land of al-Mawṣil, had achieved good conditions for himself and his companions. When Ibn Khurrazād's companions saw that, they inclined toward him and made for him. Ibn Khurrazād fought the Kurds of the Jalāliyya and others in the districts of Shahrazūr and was killed. Hārūn then became sole leader of the Kharijites, grew strong, and his followers multiplied. They took control of the villages and rural districts, and posted on the Tigris men who collected the zakāt from goods transported downstream and upstream. They spread their deputies through the rural districts to collect tithes from the crops.
