Translation
✧ Those of the notables who died in the year two hundred and sixty-six. Ibrāhīm b. Ūrama b. Siyāwash b. Farrūkh, Abū Isḥāq al-Aṣbahānī: Ibrāhīm b. Ūrama b. Siyāwash b. Farrūkh, Abū Isḥāq al-Aṣbahānī. He resided in Baghdād. He used to select narrations from its shaykhs, and his books were lost during the days of the Basra strife. Not much ḥadīth has been transmitted from him. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy, noble, reliable, and a great memorizer. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Qazwīnī, who said: I heard Abū ʿAlī al-Qahsatānī say to Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq al-Qāḍī: “O Qāḍī, I have seen our shaykhs Aḥmad, Yaḥyā, ʿAlī, and Ibn Abī Shaybah, and Zuhayr and many others, and I would not regard any of them as greatly superior to the rest, but if Ibrāhīm al-Aṣbahānī had lived in their time, he would have been like one of them or surpassed them.” Ismāʿīl said to him: “You have spoken truly; you are not far off, not far off.” From Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, who said: It was read to Ibn al-Munādī, while I was listening, who said: Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Ūrama al-Aṣbahānī was caught by rain at the end of the last session in which he selected narrations from al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad al-Dūrī. That was on Monday, three nights remaining of Shaʿbān, in the year 266. It was a heavy rain, and he fell ill because of it. Then he died on Saturday at sunset prayer, and was buried on Sunday at al-Kunāsah beside the grave of Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Daqīqī. That was on the fourth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. He was then fifty-five years old. We have not seen anyone like him in his field. Ziyād al-Luʾluʾī, except that he held a bad doctrine concerning the Qurʾān. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: “Al-Thaljī is an innovator, a man of whim.” Al-Mutawakkil sent to Aḥmad asking him about appointing Ibn al-Thaljī to the judiciary, and he said: “No, not even over a guard.” From Zakariyyā al-Sājī, who said: “Muḥammad b. Shujāʿ al-Thaljī was a liar. He schemed to invalidate the ḥadīth of the Messenger of God ﷺ and rejected it in support of Abū Ḥanīfah and his opinion.” From Abū al-Fatḥ al-Azdī al-Ḥāfiẓ, who said: “Muḥammad b. Shujāʿ al-Thaljī is a liar. It is not lawful to narrate from him because of his evil doctrine and his deviation in religion.” Ibn ʿAdī said: “He used to fabricate ḥadīths concerning divine attributes, attributing them to the scholars of ḥadīth in order to defame them.” He died suddenly in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year.
