Translation

✧ The King of the Romans and Luʾluʾah In this year, the Ṣaqālibah surrendered Luʾluʾah to the Romans. The reason for that was that Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn had continuously raided from Ṭarsūs before he governed Egypt. When he came to govern Egypt, he preferred to govern Ṭarsūs so that he might raid from it as an emir. He wrote to Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq requesting its governorship, but he did not grant him that, and he appointed Muḥammad b. Hārūn al-Taghlibī over it. He rode in a ship on the Tigris, and the wind cast it to the shore, where the followers of Musāwir al-Shārī seized him and killed him. He appointed in his place Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Armanī, and Antioch was added to him. The people of Ṭarsūs rose against him and killed him. Then he appointed over it Arkhūz b. Yūlugh b. Ṭarkhān al-Turkī. He proceeded there, being inexperienced and ignorant. He behaved badly and delayed the stipends and provisions of the people of Luʾluʾah, so they complained about that and wrote to the people of Ṭarsūs, complaining of him and saying: If you do not send us our stipends and provisions, we will surrender the fortress to the Romans. The people of Ṭarsūs considered that a grave matter and collected among themselves fifteen thousand dinars to carry to them. Arkhūz took it to carry it to the people of Luʾluʾah, but he took it for himself. When the money was slow in reaching them, they surrendered the fortress to the Romans. The people of Ṭarsūs were thunderstruck, because it had been a thorn in the enemy's throat: no Roman expedition went out by land or sea without them seeing it and giving warning of it. The news reached al-Muʿtamid, and he entrusted it to Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, appointing over it someone to undertake raiding against the Romans and guard that frontier.
