✧ Those of the notables who died in the year 258 AH Aḥmad b. Budayl b. Quraysh b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Jaʿfar al-Yāmī al-Kūfī Aḥmad b. Budayl b. Quraysh b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Jaʿfar al-Yāmī al-Kūfī. He heard Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, ʿAbd Allāh b. Idrīs, Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth, Muḥammad b. Fuḍayl, Wakīʿ, Abū Muʿāwiyah, and others. He was a man of knowledge and virtue. He held the judgeship of Kūfah and was called 'the monk of Kūfah.' When he was appointed, he used to say: 'I have been forsaken in my old age.' He also held the judgeship of Hamadhān. He came to Baghdad and narrated ḥadīth there. Ibn Ṣāʿid and others narrated from him. He died in this year. From al-Qāḍī Abū ʿUmar—that is Muḥammad b. Yūsuf—Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Maḥāmilī the judge, and Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. al-ʿAbbās al-Nūbakhtī, they said: Abū al-Qāsim ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān narrated to us, he said: I was a scribe for Mūsā b. Bughā, and we were at al-Rayy. Its judge at that time was Aḥmad b. Budayl al-Kūfī. Mūsā needed to consolidate an estate there in which he had shares and to develop it. In it there was a share belonging to an orphan. I went to Aḥmad b. Budayl—or he said: I summoned Aḥmad b. Budayl—and I spoke to him about selling the orphan's share on our behalf and taking the price. He refused and said: 'The orphan has no need to sell, and I do not feel safe selling his property when he is not in need of it, lest some mishap befall the wealth and I would have caused him loss.' I said: 'I will give you double its value for his share.' He said: 'That is no excuse for me to sell. The form of wealth, whether much or little, is the same.' He said: I tried every approach with him while he refused, and he wearied me. I said to him: 'O judge, will you not do it? For it is Mūsā b. Bughā!' He said to me: 'May God honor you, it is God, blessed and exalted be He!' He said: I felt ashamed before God Almighty to return to him after that, and I left him. I went in to Mūsā b. Bughā and he said: 'What did you accomplish regarding the estate?' I related the conversation to him. When he heard 'it is God, blessed and exalted be He,' he wept and kept repeating it, then said: 'Do not approach this estate. Look into the affair of this righteous old man. If he has any need, fulfill it.' He said: I brought him and said to him: 'The emir has excused you from the matter of the estate, because I explained to him what took place between us. He offers to fulfill your needs.' He said: He prayed for him and said: 'This action will better preserve your blessings. I have no need except the regular payment of my stipend, for it has been delayed for months and that has harmed me.' So a stipend was released for him. From Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. ʿAmrūs, he said: I heard Aḥmad b. Budayl al-Kūfī—and he was a judge—say: Al-Muʿtazz sent me messenger after messenger. I put on my cap and put on a single-layered pair of sandals. I came to his gate. The chamberlain said: 'O old man, your sandals!' I paid no attention to him and entered the second gate. The chamberlain said: 'Your sandals!' I paid no attention to him and entered the third gate. The chamberlain said: 'O old man, your sandals!' I paid no attention to him, then I said: 'Am I in the sacred valley that I should remove my sandals?!' I entered with my sandals on. He raised my seat and I sat on his prayer rug. He said: 'We have wearied you, Abū Jaʿfar.' I said: 'You have wearied me and frightened me. How will it be for you when you are asked about me?' He said: 'We intended only good. We wanted to hear knowledge.' I said: 'Do you also listen to knowledge? Should you not have come to me? Knowledge is visited; it does not visit.' He said: 'We will honor Abū Jaʿfar.' I said: 'You have beguiled me with your good manners. Write whatever you wish.' He said: He took the book, the inkwell, and the paper. I said: 'Will you write the ḥadīth of the Messenger of God ﷺ on paper with ink?' He said: 'On what shall I write?' I said: 'On parchment with ink.' They brought parchment and ink. The scribe took it, intending to write. I said: 'Write with your own hand!' He gestured to me that he could not. So I dictated to him two ḥadīths—may God cool his eyes with them. He was asked: 'Which two ḥadīths?' He said: I said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Whoever is entrusted with a flock and does not surround it with sincere counsel, God has forbidden Paradise to him.' And the second: 'There is no commander of ten but he will be brought on the Day of Resurrection in chains.' Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Sawādah, Abū al-ʿAbbās, known as Khushaysh Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. He ascended the chair and people gathered around him. The first thing he began with was to recite: A preacher's admonitions will never be accepted until his heart heeds them first. O people, who is more unjust than a preacher who contradicts what he said in public? He shows his goodness among people but defies the Merciful when alone. He fell from the chair and lost consciousness, and did not speak that day. Then after that he captured the hearts of the people of Shīrāz, so that whenever he wanted to make them laugh, he made them laugh, and whenever he wanted to make them weep, he made them weep. He said: What shall I say of clay kneaded with the water of revelation and planted with the water of the message—can anything emanate from the two but the musk of guidance and the ambergris of piety?! He said: So the ʿAlawī stuffed his mouth with pearls. Then he visited him the next day and Yaḥyā b. And from Abū ʿAmr al-Dimashqī who said: I heard Ibn al-Jallāʾ say: I said to my father and mother: I would like you to give me to God Almighty. They said: We have given you to God. I was absent from them for a period, then I returned from my absence. It was a rainy night and I knocked on their door. They said: Who? I said: Your son. They said: We had a son, but we gave him to God; and we are Arabs—we do not take back what we have given. And they did not open the door for me. And from Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā al-Jallāʾ who said: My father died, and when he was laid on the washing bench we saw him laughing, so people were confused about his state. They brought a physician, covered his face, and he took his pulse and said: This is a dead man. Then they uncovered his face and saw him laughing. And whenever someone came to wash him, a dread from him would seize them and they could not wash him, until a man from his brethren came and washed him, and he was shrouded, prayed over, and buried. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥammād b. ʿAṭāʾ, and it is said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥammād b. ʿAṭāʾ, and it is said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh [b. ʿAmr b. Ḥammād b. ʿAbd Allāh], client of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, known as al-Jammāz. From the people of al-Baṣrah. He was a poet, a literary man, and a jester. He used to say: I am older than Abū Nuwās. He entered Baghdād in the days of al-Rashīd and in the days of al-Mutawakkil. And from Yamūt b. al-Muzarriʿ who said: Al-Jammāz sat eating at a table before Jaʿfar b. al-Qāsim, while Jaʿfar was eating at another table with the group. The dish would be lifted from before Jaʿfar and placed before al-Jammāz and those with him. Sometimes a little came and sometimes nothing came. Al-Jammāz said: May God keep the emir righteous; today we are but a band, and sometimes some money is left for us, and sometimes the people of the shares take it and nothing remains for us. He said: And Yamūt informed us, saying: My father and al-Jammāz were walking in the evening with me behind them. We passed by an imam who was waiting for someone to pass by him so he could pray with him. When he saw us he immediately began the prayer, hurrying. Al-Jammāz said to him: Leave this aside, for the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade that the oncoming caravan be met. And from ʿĀfiyah b. Shabīb al-Tamīmī who said: We used to speak frequently about al-Jammāz in the presence of al-Mutawakkil, and he wanted to see him. I was among those who brought him. When he entered upon him, he did not make the impression we had wanted, so we all became partisan for him. Al-Mutawakkil said to him: Speak, for I want to test you. Al-Jammāz said: With one menstruation or two? The assembly laughed, and al-Fatḥ said to him: I spoke to the Commander of the Faithful about you until he appointed you governor of the Island of the Apes. Al-Jammāz said to him: Are you not in hearing and obedience?! May God keep you righteous! So al-Fatḥ was confounded and fell silent. Al-Mutawakkil ordered ten thousand dirhams for him, and he took them and died of joy over them. Among the notables who died in this year: Aḥmad b. Ḥafṣ. Aḥmad b. Sinān al-Qaṭṭān. Aḥmad b. al-Furāt.
