✧ Reports of the leader of the Zanj In this year, Juʿlān was dispatched to fight the leader of the Zanj at al-Baṣrah. When he reached al-Baṣrah, he encamped at a place between himself and the leader of the Zanj a parasang away, and he dug a trench around himself and his companions. He remained in his trench for six months, and he kept sending al-Zaynabī, the Banū Hāshim, and those who were light for fighting them on that day which Juʿlān had appointed for meeting him. There was nothing between them except stoning and archery, and Juʿlān found no way to meet him, because the place was too narrow for the cavalry to maneuver, and most of Juʿlān's companions were horsemen. When his stay in his trench became prolonged, the leader of the Zanj sent his companions to the entrances of the trench, and they fell upon Juʿlān by night, killing a group of his companions, and the rest feared greatly. Al-Zaynabī had gathered the Bilāliyyah and the Saʿdiyyah and sent them from two places, and they fought the vile one, but he defeated them and inflicted a great slaughter among them. So Juʿlān abandoned his trench and withdrew to al-Baṣrah, and his incapacity became apparent to the sultan, who removed him from the war against the Zanj and ordered Saʿīd al-Ḥājib to fight them. The leader of the Zanj then moved from the salt marsh where he had been and encamped at the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb. He seized twenty-four seagoing vessels from the sea craft, and from them they took incalculable wealth, and those in them were killed, and his companions plundered them for three days. Afterwards he took for himself from the plunder. The entry of the Zanj into al-Ubullah In the year 256 AH, the Zanj entered al-Ubullah, killing many people there and burning it. The reason for that was that when Juʿlān withdrew from his trench to al-Baṣrah, Shannā, the leader of the Zanj, pressed raids upon al-Ubullah, and his raiding parties kept striking toward the area of Nahr Maʿqil. He did not cease fighting until Wednesday, five nights remaining of Rajab, when he conquered it. Abū al-Aḥwaṣ and ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ḥumayd b. al-Ṭūsī were killed, and he set it ablaze. It was built of teak, so the fire spread quickly in it, and a great many of its people were killed, and they seized immense wealth, but what the fire burned was more than what was plundered. The Zanj's taking of ʿAbbādān In the same year, the people of ʿAbbādān sent to the leader of the Zanj and surrendered their fortress to him. What moved them to that was that when he had done to the people of al-Ubullah what he did, the people of ʿAbbādān feared for themselves, their families, and their wealth. So they wrote to him seeking safety on condition that they surrender the town to him. He granted them safety, and they surrendered it to him. He dispatched his companions to them, and they took what was in it of slaves and weapons, and he distributed it among his companions. Their taking of al-Ahwāz When the ʿAlawī al-Baṣrī had finished with al-Ubullah and ʿAbbādān, he coveted al-Ahwāz. He stirred up his companions toward Jayy, and its people did not linger but fled from them. The Zanj entered it, killed those they saw there, burned, plundered, and laid waste what lay beyond it up to al-Ahwāz. When they reached al-Ahwāz, the troops and its inhabitants who were there fled, and only a few remained. They entered and ruined it. Ibrāhīm b. al-Mudabbir, the tax collector, was there, and they took him captive after he was wounded, and all his wealth was plundered. That was on the twelfth night of Ramaḍān. When he had done that to al-Ahwāz, ʿAbbādān, and al-Ubullah, the people of al-Baṣrah feared him, and many of its inhabitants moved to other lands.
