Translation

✧ Mention of several events: In the year two hundred fifty-five (255 AH), Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf seized Aḥmad b. Isrāʾīl, the secretary of al-Muʿtazz, and al-Ḥasan b. Makhlad, the secretary of Qabīḥah, the mother of al-Muʿtazz, and Abū Nūḥ ʿĪsā b. Ibrāhīm. The reason was that the Turks demanded their stipends, and Ṣāliḥ said to al-Muʿtazz: "These people are demanding their stipends, but there is nothing in the treasury, and these secretaries have taken the wealth." Aḥmad was the vizier of al-Muʿtazz, and al-Ḥusayn was the vizier of the mother of al-Muʿtazz. Aḥmad b. Isrāʾīl said to him: "O disobedient one, son of the disobedient!" They exchanged words, and Ṣāliḥ fell down in a faint, and water was sprinkled on his face. His companions, who were at the door, learned of this, and they shouted with a single cry, drew their swords, and entered upon al-Muʿtazz. He entered and left them. Ṣāliḥ seized Aḥmad b. Isrāʾīl, Ibn Makhlad, and ʿĪsā, loaded them with iron, and carried them to his house. Al-Muʿtazz said to Ṣāliḥ before he carried them away: "Give me Aḥmad, for he is my secretary," but he did not. Then he beat them and took their written undertakings for a substantial sum assessed upon them, but nothing was obtained from them. Jaʿfar b. Maḥmūd took charge of command and prohibition. Among the events of that year: Al-Muʿtazz sat in the public court to hear grievances, and he dismissed, appointed, and carried out affairs. He appointed Mūsā b. Bughā over the dīwān of the army. He appointed Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir over the shurṭah of Baghdad and the Sawād, and that was on the sixth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir.
