the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others
Translation
✧ They differed over whether he was a prophet or not. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, and al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim said: he was a prophet. The majority disagreed with them on this. It is narrated to us from ʿAlī ؓ that he said: he was a righteous servant who commanded his people to fear God; he was neither a prophet nor a king. Wahb said: he was a king to whom no revelation was sent. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir narrated with his chain from Abū Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I do not know whether Tubbaʿ was accursed or not, and I do not know whether the prescribed punishments are expiations for those who undergo them or not, and I do not know whether Dhū al-Qarnayn was a prophet or not.” This is rare from this line. From Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Dhū al-Qarnayn was a righteous king. God was pleased with his deeds and praised him in His Book. He was granted victory, and al-Khiḍr was his vizier. He mentioned that al-Khiḍr ﷺ was at the vanguard of his army, and his position with him was that of an adviser—the one who is to the king like a vizier in setting people’s affairs aright today. Al-Azraqī and others mentioned that Dhū al-Qarnayn embraced Islam at the hands of Abraham the Friend, and circumambulated the Noble Kaʿbah with him and Ishmael ﷺ. It is most unusual for anyone to say: he was an angel from among the angels. This has been reported from the Commander of the Faithful ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, for he heard a man say to another, “O Dhū al-Qarnayn,” and said: “Stop! Is it not enough for you to call yourselves by the names of the prophets, that you now call yourselves by the names of the angels?” Al-Suhaylī mentioned this. The correct view is that he was one of the just kings.
