Whenever I was invited to a feast, he would mount when I mounted, and when we entered the place, he would be honored because of me. Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān, the governor of al-Baṣrah, held a feast, and I was invited to it. I said to myself: By God, if this man comes with me, I will disgrace him. When I mounted, he mounted with me, and I entered the house and he entered with me, and he was honored because of me. When the meal was served, I said: Durust b. Ziyād related to us, from Abān b. Ṭāriq, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever goes to a meal to which he was not invited goes as one who has eaten and drunk what is forbidden." The gate-crasher said: "I felt ashamed for you, O Abū ʿAmr. A man like you speaks such words at the table of the governor! Moreover, there is no one here who does not think that you aimed these words at him. Then you are not ashamed to relate from Durust, while Durust is a liar whose ḥadīth cannot be used as proof, and from Abān b. Ṭāriq, while Abān was someone the children of al-Madīnah used to play with. But where are you from what Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl related to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from al-Zubayr, from Jābir, from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: 'The food of one person suffices two, and the food of two suffices four.'" Naṣr b. ʿAlī said: It was as if I had been fed a stone. When we left the house, the gate-crasher began to recite: Whoever thinks, among those who encounter wars, that he will not be struck has thought weakly. And on the authority of Naṣr b. ʿAlī: I entered upon al-Mutawakkil, and he was praising gentleness and spoke at length. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, al-Aṣmaʿī recited to me: I have not seen the like of gentleness in its softness; it brings out the virgin from her chamber. Whoever seeks help through gentleness in his affair can extract the snake from its hole. He said: "O boy, the inkwell and paper," and he wrote them down. On the authority of Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī, who said: I heard Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd say: Al-Mustaʿīn bi-llāh sent for Naṣr b. ʿAlī to summon him for the judiciary. ʿAbd al-Malik, the governor of al-Baṣrah, called him and ordered him to comply. He said: "I will return and seek guidance from God through istikhārah." He returned to his house at midday, prayed two rakʿahs, and said: "O God, if there is any good for me with You, then take me to You." He slept, and they woke him, and he was dead. Naṣr died in one of the two months of Rabīʿ of this year. ʿAbbād b. Yaʿqūb al-Rawājī ʿAbbād b. Yaʿqūb al-Rawājī. He heard from al-Walīd b. Abī Thawr, ʿAlī b. Hāshim, and others. He was extreme in Shīʿism. Al-Bukhārī related from him, perhaps not knowing that he was a Shīʿī. [He died in this year.] On the authority of Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar, who said: I heard Qāsim b. Zakariyyā al-Muṭarriz say: I came to al-Kūfah and wrote down ḥadīth from all its shaykhs except ʿAbbād b. Yaʿqūb. When I had finished with everyone else, I entered upon him. He used to test those who heard from him. He said to me: "Who dug the sea?" I said: "God created the sea." He said: "That is true, but who dug it?" I said: "Let the shaykh mention it." He said: "ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib dug it." Then he said: "Who made it flow?" I said: "God makes rivers flow and springs gush forth." He said: "That is true, but who made the sea flow?" I said: "Let the shaykh inform me." He said: "Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī made it flow." He said: ʿAbbād was blind, and I saw in his house a hanging sword and a shield. I said: "O shaykh, whose sword is this?" He said: "Mine. I have prepared it to fight with it alongside the Mahdī." When I finished hearing what I wanted to hear from him and resolved to leave the city, I entered upon him and he asked me as he had before. He said: "Who dug the sea?" I said: "Muʿāwiyah dug it, and ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ made it flow." Then I leaped up from before him and began to run, and he began to shout: "Catch the sinner, the enemy of God, and kill him!" The compiler said: Something similar happened to Ṣāliḥ Jazarah, for he came to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Abān, who was extreme in Shīʿism and used to test those who heard from him. He said to him: "Who dug the well of Zamzam?" Ṣāliḥ said: "Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān dug it." He said: "Who carried away its earth?" He said: "ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ." He scolded him and entered his house.
