The Year 251 AH
The reason was that Bāghir had been one of the killers of al-Mutawakkil, so his provisions had been increased and he had been granted land grants. Among what he was granted were villages in the Sawād of al-Kūfah. A man from the people of Bārūsmā undertook them for two thousand dinars. A man from the people of that district, called Ibn Māramah, fell upon an agent of Bāghir and assaulted him, so he imprisoned Ibn Māramah and had him fettered. Then he got free and traveled to Sāmarrā, where he met Dalīl b. Yaʿqūb al-Naṣrānī, who was at that time in charge of the affairs of Bughā al-Sharābī and the ruler in the state. Ibn Māramah was a friend of his. Bāghir was one of Bughā's commanders, so Dalīl prevented him from wronging Aḥmad b. Māramah and obtained justice for him against Bāghir. Bāghir became angry and shunned Dalīl. Bāghir was brave, and Bughā and others feared him. He came to Bughā in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 250 AH while drunk, while Bughā was in the bathhouse. He entered upon him and said: "Whoever kills Dalīl, he will be killed in retaliation for him." Bughā said to him: "Even if you wanted my two sons, I would not prevent you from them, but be patient, for the affairs of the caliphate are in Dalīl's hands. I will appoint someone else, then do with him what you wish." Bughā sent to Dalīl ordering him not to ride and informed him of the news, and he appointed someone else in his secretarial post. Bāghir imagined that he had dismissed him, so he calmed down. Then Bughā reconciled the two of them, while Bāghir was threatening him. Bāghir devoted himself to the service of al-Mustaʿīn, and that was reported to al-Mustaʿīn. When it was Bughā's turn at his residence, al-Mustaʿīn said: "What service did Ītākh have?" Waṣīf informed him, and he said: "These duties should be assigned to Bāghir." Dalīl heard that, so he rode to Bughā and said to him: "You are in your house while they are planning your dismissal. When you are dismissed, you will be killed." So Bughā rode to the caliph's palace that same day and said to Waṣīf: "Did you want to dismiss me?" He swore that he did not know what the caliph intended. So they made an agreement to remove Bāghir from the palace and to devise a trick against him. They spread a rumor to him that he would be appointed commander, be invested with robes of honor, and take the place of Bughā and Waṣīf. Bāghir and those with him sensed evil, so he gathered to himself the group who had pledged allegiance to him for the killing of al-Mutawakkil, along with others besides them. He renewed the covenant with them to kill al-Mustaʿīn, Bughā, and Waṣīf, and said: "We pledge allegiance to the son of al-Muʿtaṣim or the son of al-Wāthiq, and the authority will be ours as it is for these two." They agreed to that. The news reached al-Mustaʿīn, so he sent for Bughā and Waṣīf and said to them: "You two made me caliph, then you want to kill me?" They swore that they knew nothing of that. He informed them of the news, and their opinion agreed on seizing Bāghir and two Turks with him and imprisoning them. They summoned Bāghir, and he came with a number of men, but he was diverted to a bathhouse and imprisoned there. The news reached the Turks, so they fell upon the caliph's stable and plundered it. They rode whatever was in it and besieged the palace with weapons. Bughā and Waṣīf ordered the killing of Bāghir, and he was killed. Al-Mustaʿīn's Journey to Baghdad When Bāghir was killed and the news of his killing reached the rioting Turks, they persisted in what they were doing. So al-Mustaʿīn, Bughā, Waṣīf, Shāhak the servant, Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ b. Shīrzād, and Dalīl went down to Baghdad in a ḥarrāqah. A group of Turkish commanders rode to those rioters and asked them to desist, but they did not. When they learned of the departure of al-Mustaʿīn, Bughā, and Waṣīf, they regretted it. Then they headed to Dalīl's house and the houses of his family and neighbors and plundered them, until they came to taking the wood and the fodder of the animals. When they arrived in Baghdad, Ibn Māramah fell ill, and Dalīl visited him. He said to him: "What is the cause of your illness?" He said: "The chafing of the fetter broke open." Dalīl said: "If the fetter wounded you, you have indeed broken the caliphate and sought discord." Ibn Māramah died in those days. One of the poets said about that: By my life, if they killed Bāghir, Bāghir stirred up a grinding war, And the caliph and the two commanders fled By night seeking ships. They shouted to the sawyer of their sailor, And he came to them outstripping the onlookers. He made them board the belly of a ḥarrāqah, And the sound of their oars as they traveled. The affair of Ibn Māramah was not such That we should earn through it ruinous wars. But Dalīl made a single effort, For which God disgraced the worlds. He arrived at Baghdad before dawn, And there befell them from him what they hate. Would that the ship had never come to us, And that God had drowned it and its passengers. The Turks and the Maghribīs advanced, And the Farāghinah came in armor. Their squadrons moved in weaponry, Hoping for cavalry and infantry, a clear matter. A man knowledgeable in the affairs of wars Stood to fight them, taking charge of it for a time. He renewed a wall on the two sides, Until it surrounded them all. And he secured its solid gates Upon the wall, protecting al-Mustaʿīn with them. And he prepared trebuchets that oscillate, That snatch away lives and protect the den. The Turks prevented the people from going down to Baghdad. They seized a sailor who had rented out his ship, beat him, and crucified him on its mast. So the ship owners refrained from going down except secretly. Al-Mustaʿīn's arrival in Baghdad was on the fifth of Muḥarram of this year. He lodged at the residence of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. Then the commanders came to Baghdad, except Jaʿfar al-Khayyāṭ and Sulaymān b. Yaḥyā b. Muʿādh. The leading secretaries, officials, Banū Hāshim, and a group of the followers of Bughā and Waṣīf arrived there.
