✧ Then the year 245 AH began. In this year al-Mutawakkil ordered the construction of al-Mākhūza and named it al-Jaʿfariyya. He granted fiefs in it to the commanders and his companions, and strove in building it. It is said that he spent more than two million dinars on it. He gathered the Qurʾān reciters there, and they recited, and the entertainers attended, and he gave away more than two million dirhams. He and his companions called it al-Mutawakkiliyya. He built in it a palace which he called Luʾluʾa, the like of which was never seen in its height, and dug for it a canal to irrigate what was around it. Then al-Mutawakkil was killed, and the digging of the canal ceased, and al-Jaʿfariyya was destroyed. Earthquakes in the lands of the Maghrib, al-Madāʾin, Antioch, and other lands In it the lands of the Maghrib were shaken by earthquakes, and fortresses, dwellings, and bridges were destroyed. Al-Mutawakkil distributed three million dirhams among those whose homes were damaged. ʿAskar al-Mahdī and al-Madāʾin were shaken, and Antioch was shaken, and many people were killed there. One thousand five hundred houses collapsed in it, and more than ninety towers fell from its wall. They heard terrifying sounds that they could not describe. Its bald mountain split apart and fell into the sea. On that day the sea surged, and a dark, black, stinking smoke rose from it. A river near it sank for a distance of a parasang, and no one knew where it went. It is said that the people of Sīs heard a continuous, terrifying cry, and many of them died from it. The lands of al-Jazīra, the frontier fortresses, Ṭarsūs, and Adana were shaken, and Syria was shaken, so that only a little of al-Lādhiqiyya escaped, and the people of Jabala perished. In it the springs of the well of Makkah sank, so that the price of a water-skin reached a dirham. Al-Mutawakkil sent money and spent it on it. In it the Byzantines raided Sumaysāṭ, and they killed, took captives, and captured many people. ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā al-Armanī raided the summer expedition. The people of Luʾluʾa prevented their commander from going up to it. The king of the Byzantines sent to them a patrician, guaranteeing each man among them a thousand dinars if they would hand over Luʾluʾa to him. They brought the patrician up to them, then they were given their overdue stipends and what they wanted, and they handed over Luʾluʾa and the patrician to Bilkājūr, who sent him to al-Mutawakkil. The king of the Byzantines offered a thousand Muslim captives as ransom for him. Who led the pilgrimage this year The pilgrimage was led by Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Imām, known as al-Zaynabī, who was the governor of Makkah. Al-Mutawakkil's Nawrūz, by which he granted relief to the people of the land tax through his postponement of it for them, fell on the eleventh of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, the seventeenth of Ḥazīrān, and the twenty-eighth of Ardibihisht. Al-Buḥturī said: Indeed the day of Nawrūz has returned to the covenant which Ardashīr established. Mention of the infidels' sortie in al-Andalus against the lands of Islam In this year the Magians went out from the lands of al-Andalus in ships against the lands of Islam. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the ruler of the lands of Islam, ordered the armies to be sent out to fight them. The ships of the Magians reached Ishbīliyya and landed at the island. The infantry entered to fight them and burned the congregational mosque. Then they crossed to the other shore and landed at Nākūr. Then they returned to al-Andalus, and the people of Tudmīr were defeated and entered the fortress of Aryūwāla. Then they advanced to the wall of Ifranja and raided, seizing much plunder and many captives. Then they departed, and the ships of Muḥammad met them and fought them. They burned two ships of the infidels' vessels and captured two other ships, gaining what was in them as booty. At that the infidels became enraged and intensified the fighting, and a group of Muslims were martyred. The ships of the Magians went on until they reached the city of Banbalūna, and they captured its ruler Gharsiya the Frank, who ransomed himself from them for ninety thousand dinars. In it the governor of Ṭarasūna raided Banbalūna and conquered the fortress of Baylasān and took its people captive. Then on the second day there was a battle against the Muslims in which a group were martyred. Mention of the war between the Berbers and Ibn al-Aghlab in Ifrīqiya In this year there was a great battle between the Berbers and the army of Abū Ibrāhīm Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Aghlab in Jumādā al-Ākhira. The reason was that the Berbers of Lahāna refused to pay their tithes and alms to the governor of Tripoli, and fought him and defeated him. He went to Lubda and fortified it, then marched to Tripoli. The emir Aḥmad b. Muḥammad sent an army with his brother Ziyādat Allāh, and the Berbers were defeated and many of them were killed. Ziyādat Allāh sent the cavalry in pursuit of them, killing those he caught and capturing a group, whose necks were struck. What was in their camp was burned. After that the Berbers submitted, gave hostages, and rendered their obedience.
