From him narrated al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ. He died in [Muḥarram] of this year. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khurāsānī Muḥammad b. Asad, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khurāsānī, known as al-Khushanī. He was ascribed to a village among the villages of Asfarāyīn. He heard Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ, [Sufyān] b. ʿUyaynah, Wakīʿ, and others. A great many narrated from him, except that [Ibrāhīm] al-Ḥarbī called him Aḥmad. He was thiqah (trustworthy) with understanding. In this year also died Isḥāq b. Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mūsā al-Anṣārī. And Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī al-Shawārib, and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Asīd b. Abī al-ʿĪṣ b. Umayyah, the qāḍī, in Jumādā al-Ūlā. Among the notables who died in it: Ḥumayd b. Masʿadah, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Bayān, and the vizier Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. al-Zayyāt. Among the notables who died in it: Aḥmad b. ʿAbdah al-Ḍabbī. And Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā b. Isḥāq Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Rāwandī. Attributed to a village in the lands of Qāsān, then he grew up in Baghdad. There he used to compose books on zandaqah (heresy). He had excellence, but he used it in what harms him and does not benefit him in this world and the Hereafter. We have mentioned for him a lengthy biography according to what Ibn al-Jawzī mentioned. We have only mentioned him here because al-Qāḍī Ibn Khillikān mentioned that he died in this year, and he was mistaken about him, and he did not criticize him at all. Rather he praised him and said: Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā b. Isḥāq al-Rāwandī, the famous scholar. He has a position in the science of kalām. He was among the excellent of his time. He has about 114 composed books, among them the books "Faḍīḥat al-Muʿtazilah" (The Scandal of the Muʿtazilah), "Kitāb al-Tāj" (The Book of the Crown), "Kitāb al-Zumurrudah" (The Book of the Emerald), "Kitāb al-Qaṣab" (The Book of the Reed), and others. He has merits and debates with a group of the scholars of kalām. He was unique in doctrines that the People of the Book transmitted from him in their books. He died in the year 245 at Raḥbat Mālik b. Ṭawq al-Taghlibī, and it is said: in Baghdad. His age was about forty years. It is mentioned in "al-Bustān" that he died in the year 250, and God knows best. This is his wording verbatim. Ibn al-Jawzī dated his death in the year 298, and a lengthy biography of him will come later.
