الْوَقْتِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَهْ، لَيْسَ لَنَا اللَّيْلَةَ خُبْزٌ، قَالَ: فَبَعَثَ بِبَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ خَلْفَ الرَّسُولِ لِيَرُدَّ الْمَالَ إِلَى حَضْرَةِ صَاحِبِهِ، فَزَعًا مِنْ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ ابْنُهُ ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Isḥāq b. Abī Isrāʾīl Isḥāq b. Abī Isrāʾīl—and the name of Abū Isrāʾīl is Ibrāhīm b. Kāmjar—and the kunyah of Isḥāq is Abū Yaʿqūb, originally from Marw. He was born in the year 150, and it is said 151. He heard from Ḥammād b. Zayd, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and others. Al-Bukhārī transmitted from him; he was a ḥāfiẓ, trustworthy, reliable, except that he used to say: "The Qurʾān is the speech of God," and he would stop, not saying "created" or "uncreated." He used to say: "I do not say this out of doubt, but I remain silent as the people before me remained silent," so they censured him for his silence. Ḥafṣ b. Maʿmar al-Mahrawānī said: I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream standing over Isḥāq b. Abī Isrāʾīl, saying to him: "I have come to you from fifteen hundred parasangs. Are you the one who stops regarding the Qurʾān?" Ibrāhīm b. al-Mudabbir al-Kātib said: We were with al-Mutawakkil when Isḥāq b. Abī Isrāʾīl entered upon him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ narrated to us from Hishām b. Ḥassān from al-Ḥasan that he said: 'Shaking hands increases affection.'" So al-Mutawakkil extended his hand until he shook hands with him. Isḥāq died in Sāmarrāʾ in Shaʿbān of this year. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī Abū Muḥammad Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, Abū Muḥammad—and it is said Abū ʿAlī—known as al-Ḥulwānī. He heard Yazīd b. Hārūn, ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Ibn Numayr, Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl, ʿAffān b. Muslim, and others. Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, al-Ḥarbī, and Abū Dāwūd transmitted from him. He was trustworthy, a ḥāfiẓ, meticulous, and firmly established. He once adopted the position of stopping regarding the Qurʾān, so people turned away from him. Then he said: "The Qurʾān is the speech of God, uncreated." Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnbarī al-Baṣrī Sawwār b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sawwār b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qudāmah, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnbarī al-Baṣrī. He settled in Baghdad and held the judgeship of al-Ruṣāfah there [in the year 237]. He narrated from his father, from Ibn Mahdī, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, and others. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, Ibn Ṣāʿid, and others transmitted from him. He was a jurist, eloquent, learned, a poet, and trustworthy. Al-Jurmī said: I entered a bathhouse in Darb al-Thalj, and there was Sawwār b. ʿAbd Allāh the judge in the inner room, lying on his back with a waist-wrapper on him. I sat near him, and he conversed with me for a while. Then he said: "You have made me feel abashed, O man. Either you leave or I leave." I said: "I came to ask you about a question." He said: "This is not the place for questions." I said: "It is one of the questions of the bathhouse." He laughed and said: "Bring it." I said: "Who is the one who says: She stripped my bones of their flesh and left them Bare, from what befell them, breaking apart; And emptied them of their marrow, so they are like Glass vessels in whose hollows the wind whistles; When they hear mention of parting, their joints Tremble in fear of what they await; Take my hand, then lift the garment and look— Indeed my body is there, but I conceal myself." Sawwār said: "By God, I said them." I said: "They are sung to music and set to melody." He said: "If the one who sings them testified before me, I would accept his testimony." Muḥammad b. Sallām said: Ḥammād b. Mūsā was in charge of the affairs of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān and had the upper hand over him. The judge Sawwār imprisoned a man for something for which judges imprison. Ḥammād sent and had the man released from prison. His adversary came to Sawwār and told him that Ḥammād had released the man from prison. Sawwār mounted and went in to Muḥammad b. Sulaymān while he was seated for the people, and the people were in their ranks. He sat where Muḥammad could see him. Then he called one of his commanders and said: "Are you listening and obedient?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Sit here," and he seated him on his right. Then he called another of his peers and said to him as he had said to the first, and he answered him as the first had answered, and he seated him with his companion. He did this with a group of Muḥammad's commanders. Then he said: "Go to Ḥammād b. Mūsā and put him in prison." They looked at Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, and he gestured to them to do what he had commanded. So they went to Ḥammād and put him in prison, and Sawwār returned to his house. In the evening, Muḥammad b. Sulaymān wanted to ride to him, and messengers came to him saying: "The amir has resolved to ride to you." He said: "No. We are more entitled to ride to the amir." So he rode to him and said: "I was going to come to you, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh." Sawwār said: "I would not put the amir to that trouble. I have heard what this ignorant Ḥammād is doing." He said: "It is as the amir has heard." He said: "I would like you to grant me his offense." He said: "I will, O amir, if he returns the man to prison." He said: "Yes, with humiliation and contempt for him." So he sent the man back and imprisoned him, and released Ḥammād. The intelligence officer wrote of that to al-Rashīd, who wrote to Sawwār rewarding him with good and praising him for what he had done, and wrote to Muḥammad a harsh letter in which he mentioned Ḥammād, saying: "The Rāfiḍī son of a Rāfiḍī. By God, were it not that warning precedes punishment, I would not discipline him except with the sword, so that it might be a lesson to others and an exemplary punishment. He overrides the judge of the Muslims in his judgment, follows his own desire because of his position with you, and interferes in legal rulings out of contempt for the command of God Almighty and audacity against the Commander of the Faithful. That is only because of you and your slackening his reins. By God, if he returns to the like of it, you will find me more angered for the religion of God and more vengeful for His friends against His enemies." Sawwār died in Shawwāl of this year after his eyesight had failed. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Idrīs al-Narsī ʿUbayd Allāh b. Idrīs al-Narsī, client of Banū Ḍabbah. Abū Turāb al-Nakhshabī He died in this year. ʿAskar b. al-Ḥuṣayn, Abū Turāb al-Nakhshabī. Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jallāʾ said: Abū Turāb al-Nakhshabī once came to Makkah, and I said: "O master, where have you eaten?" He said: "I have come by your favor. I ate one meal in al-Baṣrah, one meal in al-Nibāj, and one meal with you." Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥusayn b. Khayrān the jurist said: Abū Turāb al-Nakhshabī passed by a barber and said to him: "Shave my head for God, Mighty and Majestic." He said: "Sit." So he sat. While he was shaving his head, an amir from his town passed by and asked his retinue: "Is this not Abū Turāb?" They said: "Yes." He said: "What dinars do you have with you?" A man of his close associates said: "I have a purse containing a thousand dinars." He said: "When he rises, give it to him, apologize to him, and say: 'We had nothing with us but this.'" The servant came to him and said: "The amir sends you greetings and says: 'Nothing came with us but these dinars.'" He said: "Give them to the barber." The barber said: "What shall I do with them?" He said: "Take them." He said: "By God, even if they were two thousand dinars, I would not take them!" Abū Turāb said to the servant: "Return to him and say: 'The barber did not take them. Take them yourself and spend them on your needs.'" Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: Abū Turāb died in the desert; it is said that wild beasts bit him, in the year 245. He died in Rajab of this year. Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥaḍramī Muḥammad b. Bukayr b. Wāṣil, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥaḍramī. He heard Sharīk b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Nakhaʿī, Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Wāsiṭī, and others. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī and others transmitted from him; he was trustworthy and truthful. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb, author of the book "al-Muḥabbar." A Baghdadi. He narrated from Hishām b. al-Kalbī, and Abū Saʿīd al-Sukkarī transmitted from him. It is said that Ḥabīb was the name of his mother [not of his father]. He was learned in genealogy and the reports of the Arabs, and considered reliable in his transmission. Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā Thaʿlab said: I attended the circle of Ibn Ḥabīb and he did not dictate. I said: "Woe to you, dictate! What is the matter with you?" He did not do so until I got up. By God, he was a ḥāfiẓ, truthful. Yaʿqūb was more learned than he, but he was more retentive of genealogies and reports than Yaʿqūb. He died on Monday, seven nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, in this [year], in Sāmarrāʾ. Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ b. Abī Zayd al-Qushayrī Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ b. Abī Zayd al-Qushayrī al-Naysābūrī. The shaykh of his age in Khurāsān, he traveled [to] the lands. He heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Maʿn b. ʿĪsā, ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Yazīd b. Hārūn, al-Naḍr b. Shumayl, and others. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim included him in the two Ṣaḥīḥs. He was above trustworthy, and at the utmost in asceticism. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad al-Ḥāfiẓ said: We were in the circle of Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ in his house, sitting under a tree, while he leaned against it, reading to us. If anyone in the circle raised his voice or smiled, he would get up, and none of us could get him to return. He said: A bird's droppings fell on my hand, my pen, and my book. A servant of the servants of Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd Allāh laughed, and their children were with us in the circle. Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ looked at him, put down the book, and the news reached the sultan. The servant came to me with a porter carrying three bundles of Sāmān cloth on his back and said: "By God, at that moment I owned nothing else I could bring you. This is a gift for you. If you are asked about me, say you do not know who smiled." I said: "I will." In the morning, I was taken to the sultan's gate, and I exonerated the servant of what had been said about him. I sold the Sāmān cloth for thirty dinars and used it to help me set out for Iraq. God blessed me in it, and I was nicknamed al-Ḥuṣarī, though I never sold mats, nor did any of my forefathers. Zakariyyā b. Dalwayh said: Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd Allāh sent to Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ five thousand dirhams by his messenger. The messenger entered upon him after the afternoon prayer while he was eating bread with radishes. He placed the purse before him and said: "The amir Ṭāhir has sent this money to you to spend on your family." He said: "Take it, take it. I have no need of it. The sun has risen and reached the tops of the walls. It will set within an hour. I have passed eighty. How long will I live!" He returned the money and would not accept it. The messenger took the money and left. His son entered upon him at that moment and said: "Father, we have no bread tonight." He said: So he sent one of his companions after the messenger to return the money to its owner, fearing that his son might go after the messenger and take the money. Zakariyyā said: Sometimes Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ would come out to us in the bitter winter wearing the blanket he wore at night. Al-Ḥākim said: I entered his house, sought blessing by praying in his home, and leaned against the pine tree he used to lean against. He died in this year, and Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā prayed over him. He was seen in a dream, and it was said to him: "What did God do with you?" He said: "He gave me glad tidings of ease and rest." They lied—by the One to whom sacrificial camels are driven And by the One who seeks refuge in circumambulation and prays— That the fire of passion is hotter than coals On the heart of a lover who is consumed. Ibn Ḥabīb said: Yaḥyā b. al-Mutammim al-Dawsī recited to us, by Mānī: A fawn whose face shines brighter than the full moon, Part of it, in perfection, loving part. By my father, who adorns the temple with ambergris Across his rosy cheek? Roses have a likeness to the rose of your cheeks— When I pluck it, it becomes fresh. Najāḥ b. Salamah Najāḥ b. Salamah.
