✧ Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaḍramī, known as Sajjādah Al-Ḥasan b. Ḥammād b. Kasīb, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaḍramī, known as Sajjādah. He heard Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, ʿAṭāʾ b. Muslim al-Khaffāf, Abū Khālid, and others. Narrated from him: Ibn Abī al-Dunyā. He was a proponent of the Sunnah. Muḥammad, son of the Imam al-Shāfiʿī He died in this year. Muḥammad, son of the Imam al-Shāfiʿī Abī ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Idrīs, whose kunyah was Abū ʿUthmān. He heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah and his father, and he was appointed judge in al-Jazīrah, and he narrated there. He met Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal in Baghdād, and Aḥmad said to him: "Your father is one of the six for whom I pray in the late night." Al-Shāfiʿī had another son also named Muḥammad. However, that son died young while he was in Egypt in the year thirty-one [AH]; Abū Saʿīd b. Yūnus al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned him. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Rizmah Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Rizmah, a client of the Banū Yashkur — the name of Abū Rizmah being Ghazwān, with the kunyah Abū Muḥammad — Abū ʿAmr al-Marwazī. He narrated from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, al-Naḍr b. Shumayl, and others. Narrated from him: Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī and others; he was trustworthy. Abū Ghiyāth al-Makkī Abū Ghiyāth al-Makkī, a client of Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad. Abū Ḥāzim al-Muʿallā b. Saʿīd al-Baghdādī said: I heard Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī in the year three hundred say: I was in Makkah in the year two hundred and forty, and I saw a Khurāsānī calling out: "O assembly of pilgrims, whoever finds a money-belt containing a thousand dinars and returns it to me, may God multiply his reward." He said: Then an elderly shaykh from the people of Makkah, one of the clients of Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad, stood up to him and said: "O Khurāsānī, our land is poor, its people are in dire straits, its days are numbered, and its seasons are eagerly awaited. Perhaps it is in the hand of a believer who desires what you offer him as lawful, so he takes it and returns it to you." The Khurāsānī said: "And how much does he want?" He said: "A tenth: one hundred dinars." He said: "[No, by God], I will not do that; rather, I entrust it to God, Mighty and Majestic." He said: And they parted. Ibn Jarīr said: It occurred to me that the shaykh was the owner of the idea and the finder of the money-belt, so I followed him. It was as I had thought. He went down to a house with a worn-out door and entrance. I heard him say: "O Lubābah!" She said to him: "At your service, O Abū Ghiyāth." He said: "I found the owner of the money-belt calling out about it unconditionally. I said to him: Restrict it by offering something to its finder. He said: How much? I said: Ten. He said: No, but we entrust it to God, Mighty and Majestic. So what can we do? I must return it." She said to him: "We have endured poverty with you for fifty years. You have four daughters and two sisters, and I and my mother, and you are the ninth of the household. Spend it and clothe us. Perhaps God will enrich you, and you can repay him, or He will compensate him on your behalf and settle his due." He said to her: "I will not do it, and I will not burn my heart after eighty-six years." He said: Then the people fell silent, and I left. When it was the next day, some hours into the day, I heard the Khurāsānī saying: "O assembly of pilgrims, delegation of God from the settled and the Bedouin! Whoever finds a money-belt containing a thousand dinars and returns it, may God multiply his reward." He said: The shaykh stood up to him and said: "O Khurāsānī! I told you yesterday and advised you. By God, our land is poor, with little cultivation and little livestock. I told you to give its finder a hundred dinars, so that perhaps it might fall into the hand of a man who believes and fears God, Mighty and Majestic, but you refused. So say to him: Ten dinars of it, and he will return it to you, and in the ten dinars there will be for him a covering and protection." He said: The Khurāsānī said to him: "We will not do that; rather, we entrust it to God, Mighty and Majestic." He said: Then they parted. When it was the next day, I heard the Khurāsānī calling out that same call verbatim. The shaykh stood up and said to him: "O Khurāsānī, I said the day before yesterday a tenth of it, and yesterday I told you a tenth of the tenth, and today I say to you a tenth of the tenth: with half a dinar buy a water-skin with which he draws water for the residents of Makkah for wages, and with the other half a sheep that he milks and makes that nourishment for his family." He said: "We will not do that; rather, we entrust it to God, Mighty and Majestic." He said: Then the shaykh pulled him [with a tug] and said: "Come, take your money-belt and let me sleep at night, and relieve me of your reckoning." He said to him: "Walk before me." So the shaykh walked, and the Khurāsānī followed him, and I followed them. The shaykh entered, and it was not long before he came out and said: "Enter, O Khurāsānī." He entered and I entered. He dug under a step of his, a rubbish heap, and dug out the money-belt, black, made of coarse Bukhārī rags, and said: "Is this your money-belt?" He looked at it and said: "This is my money-belt." He said: Then he untied its head from a tight binding, then poured the money into his own lap and turned it over several times, and said: "These are our dinars." He held the mouth of the money-belt with his left hand and returned the money into it with his right hand, tied it with an easy tie, and placed it on his shoulder. Then he wanted to leave. When he reached the door of the house, he turned back and said to the shaykh: "O shaykh! My father, may God have mercy on him, died and left three thousand dinars of this. He told me: Take out a third of it and distribute it among the people most deserving in your view, and sell my saddle-gear and make it provision for your pilgrimage. So I did that, and I took out a third of it, a thousand dinars, and tied it in this money-belt. Since I left Khurāsān until here, I have not seen a man more deserving of it than you. Take it, may God bless you in it." He said: Then he turned away and left it. He said: I turned to go after the Khurāsānī, but Abū Ghiyāth ran and caught up with me and brought me back. He was an old man with his waist bound with a cord and his eyebrows wrapped, and he mentioned that he was eighty-six years old. He said to me: "Sit, for I saw you following me on the first day, and you knew our story yesterday and today. I heard Aḥmad b. Yūnus al-Yarbūʿī say: I heard Mālik say: I heard Nāfiʿ say: On the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar: that the Prophet ﷺ said to ʿUmar and ʿAlī: 'If a gift comes to you without asking or coveting, accept it and do not reject it, lest you reject it back upon God, Mighty and Majestic.' And this is a gift from God, and the gift is for those present." Then he said: "O Lubābah, the money-belt! And call so-and-so and so-and-so." He called out to his daughters and his sisters, and said: "Spread out your laps." So I spread out my lap. They had no shirt with a lap to spread, so they stretched out their hands. He began counting a dinar at a time, until when it reached the tenth to me, he said: "And you have two dinars." Until the money-belt was emptied, and it was a thousand. I received a hundred dinars. The joy of their enrichment affected me more than the joy of the hundred dinars I received. When I wanted to leave, he said to me: "O young man, you are blessed. I have never seen this money before, nor hoped for it. [I advise you that it is lawful,] so keep it, and know that I used to get up and pray the dawn prayer in this worn-out shirt, then take it off and each one of them would pray in it one by one. Then I would go out to earn between noon and afternoon. Then I would return at the end of the day with what God, Mighty and Majestic, had opened for me of dried curd, dates, leeks, and discarded vegetables. Then I would take it off, and they would pass it around and pray in it the sunset and late evening prayers. God benefited them with what they took, and benefited me and you with what we took. May [God] have mercy on the owner of the money in his grave, and multiply the reward of the bearer of the money, and thank him." Ibn Jarīr said: I bade him farewell, and with it I pursued knowledge for years, sustaining myself and buying paper, traveling and paying wages. When it was after the year fifty-six, I asked about the shaykh in Makkah, and it was said that he [had] died a few months after that. His daughters had become queens under kings. The two sisters and their mother died. I used to stay with their husbands [and their children] and tell them this story, and they would feel at ease with me and honor me. Muḥammad b. Ḥayyān al-Bajalī told me in the year two hundred and ninety that none of them remained. May God bless them in what they came to, and may God's mercy be upon them all.
