✧ Then the year 240 AH commenced. Account of the rising of the people of Homs against their governor In this year, the people of Homs rose against their governor Abū al-Mughīth Mūsā b. Ibrāhīm al-Rāfiʿī. He had killed a man from among their leaders, so they killed a group of his companions and expelled him, and they expelled the tax collector. Al-Mutawakkil sent to them ʿAttāb b. ʿAttāb and Muḥammad b. ʿAbdaweyh al-Anbārī, and he said to ʿAttāb: "Tell them that the Commander of the Faithful has replaced your governor. If they obey, appoint Muḥammad b. ʿAbdaweyh over them; if they refuse, then stay and inform me, so that I may reinforce you with infantry and cavalry." So they marched to them and arrived in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir. They accepted Muḥammad b. ʿAbdaweyh, and he dealt with them in astonishing ways, until he drove them to fight him. Account of the war between the Muslims and the Franks in al-Andalus In this year, in Muḥarram, there was a fierce war between the Muslims and the Franks in al-Andalus. The reason for that was that the people of Toledo were, as we have mentioned, in opposition to Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the ruler of al-Andalus, and to his father before him. Now Muḥammad marched with his armies to Toledo. When its people heard of that, they sent to the king of Galicia seeking his aid, and to the king of the Basques, and they reinforced them with numerous troops. When Muḥammad heard of that, and he was already close to Toledo, he arrayed his companions. He had placed ambushes for them by the side of the Wādī Salīṭ, and he himself advanced toward them with a small detachment of the army. When the people of Toledo saw that, they informed the Franks of the smallness of their numbers, and they hastened to fight them, thinking they had an easy victory. When the two forces came into view of each other and battle was joined, the ambushers emerged from every direction against the polytheists and the people of Toledo. A countless number of them were killed, and the heads collected were eight thousand, which were distributed among the lands. The people of Toledo mentioned that the number of dead from both groups was twenty thousand, and the corpses of the slain remained on the Wādī Salīṭ for a long time. Account of several events In it, Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī was appointed chief judge. The people performed the pilgrimage this year under ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd. The commander of the festival security was Jaʿfar b. Dīnār. In it: He compelled the dhimmis to teach their children Syriac and Hebrew, and they were forbidden from Arabic. A crier proclaimed that, and many of them converted to Islam. The people of Khilāṭ heard a cry from the sky In this year, the people of Khilāṭ heard a cry from the sky, and many people died. It lasted three days, and thirteen villages in Ifrīqiya were swallowed up by the earth. A wind came forth from the lands of the Turks, passed through Marw, and killed many people with catarrh. Then it went to Naysābūr, then to al-Rayy, then to Hamadhān and Ḥulwān, then to Iraq. The people of Sāmarrāʾ and Madīnat al-Salām were afflicted with fever, cough, and catarrh, and the physicians recommended cupping. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb al-Hāshimī said: The merchants of the Maghrib wrote that thirteen villages of al-Qayrawān were swallowed up by the earth, and none of their inhabitants escaped except forty-two men with blackened faces. They came to al-Qayrawān, but its people expelled them, saying: "You are under divine wrath." The governor built for them an enclosure outside the city gate, and they settled there. The falling of locusts on a postal station from al-Baṣra In Dhū al-Qaʿda, locusts fell on a postal station from al-Baṣra. The people went out in pursuit of them, and during the night they were struck by darkness, rain, and wind, so one thousand three hundred persons died, among men, women, and children. In this month, hail larger than walnuts, like pigeon eggs, fell in Baghdad along with heavy rain, and on that day hail like chicken eggs fell in Sāmarrāʾ.
