Anʿam, from his father, who said: I said to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās: "O assembly of Quraysh, tell me about this Arabic script. Did you write it before Muḥammad ﷺ was sent?" He said: "Yes." I said: "From whom did you take it?" He said: "From Ḥarb b. Umayyah." I said: "And from whom did Ḥarb b. Umayyah take it?" He said: "From ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān." I said: "And from whom did ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān take it?" He said: "From the people of al-Anbār." I said: "And from whom did the people of al-Anbār take it?" He said: "From a newcomer who came to them from the people of Yemen, from Kindah." I said: "And from whom did that newcomer take it?" He said: "From al-Khalajān b. al-Wahm, the scribe of the revelation to Hūd the prophet ﷺ. He is the one who says: Is it every year a custom you innovate, And an opinion that alters from the right path? Death is better than a life in which Jurhum reviles us, Among those it reviles, and Ḥimyar." Buhlūl died in this year. Abū Ṭālib al-Nasāʾī ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. ʿĀṣim, Abū Ṭālib al-Nasāʾī. He resided in Baghdad and narrated there from Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh and others. Ḥanbal, al-Baghawī, and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy and truthful. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī Muḥammad b. Simāʿah b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Hilāl b. Wakīʿ b. Bishr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī. He was one of the adherents of raʾy (personal opinion). He held the judiciary in the city of al-Manṣūr until al-Maʾmūn dismissed him. He narrated from al-Layth b. Saʿd, Abū Yūsuf al-Qāḍī, and Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan. He was among the trustworthy ḥuffāẓ (memorizers of hadith). Muḥammad b. ʿImrān al-Ḍabbī said: I heard Muḥammad b. Simāʿah al-Qāḍī say: "I remained forty years without missing the first takbīr except one day on which my mother died. I missed one prayer in congregation on that day. So I stood and prayed twenty-five prayers, intending by that the multiplication of reward. Then sleep overcame me, and a figure came to me and said: 'O Muḥammad, you have prayed twenty-five prayers, but how can you obtain the angels' saying amīn?'" The compiler said: Ibn Simāʿah used to pray two hundred rakʿahs every day. He died in Shaʿbān of this year at the age of one hundred and three years. Abū Yaʿqūb, known as Ibn al-Zayyāt Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abān b. Abī Ḥamzah, Abū Yaʿqūb, known as Ibn al-Zayyāt. His origin was from Jabal. His father was a wealthy merchant of al-Karkh who urged him to trade, but he refused, preferring writing and its pursuit. Then he traveled to al-Ḥasan b. Sahl and praised him with a qasīdah. He gave him ten thousand dirhams. Then he attached himself to al-Muʿtaṣim, who raised his status and marked him with the vizierate. Then al-Wāthiq appointed him as vizier. He was a refined, virtuous scholar of grammar and lexicography, and he had fine poetry. Al-Buḥturī described his eloquence. Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Hārūn said: My father informed me, saying: Among the outstanding eulogies of al-Buḥturī is his saying describing the eloquence of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Zayyāt: In a composition of eloquence no one doubts Is a unique composition, And meanings which, if the rhymes had set them apart, Would have rivaled the poetry of Jarwal and Labīd. They chose the restrained use of speech, And avoided the darkness of obscurity. They arranged the near word, and thereby attained The goal of distant intent. We see all people unanimous on your excellence, Among both leader and led. The learned recognized your excellence through knowledge, And the ignorant said it by imitation. Firm of resolve, present of prudence, flowing of thought, Steadfast in station, hard of wood. Subtle in understanding, majestic in knowledge, so he pleased God Among us, and al-Wāthiq b. al-Rashīd. Passion does not incline him wherever the matter proceeds Between the one of little means and the one of ample means. A lordship he chooses, a bounty he seeks, A praise that lives, and wealth that is paid. You have met every new day, O Abū Jaʿfar, with new glory. And when you seek the leadership of a people, You excel in lordship, both newly acquired and inherited. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Zayyāt was in love with a singing slave-girl. She was sold to a man from Khurasan, who took her away. He said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik lost his reason, so much so that people feared for him. He said: How long are the hours of the night of the languishing lover, And how long his watching of the stars in the darkness! What do my garments conceal of a burning brother, Whose body is as if it were a raft of a thousand planks? Jacob did not say "Alas, my grief!" out of sorrow Except for the length of what he met of grief. Whoever would like to see one dead of love, languishing, Let him seek out al-Zayyāt and stand by him. The compiler said: Several causes combined for the destruction of Ibn al-Zayyāt. Among them: al-Wāthiq had appointed him as vizier and delegated affairs to him. Al-Wāthiq had become angry with his brother Jaʿfar al-Mutawakkil over some matter, and he assigned ʿUmar b. Faraj al-Rukhkhajī and Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ the servant to guard him and report his news at all times. Jaʿfar went to Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik, asking him to intercede with his brother al-Wāthiq so that he would be pleased with him. When he entered upon him, he remained standing before him for a long time without speaking to him. Then he gestured to him to sit, and he sat. When he finished examining the letters, he turned to him as if threatening him, and said: "What brought you?" He said: "I came to ask the Commander of the Faithful to be pleased with me." He said to those around him: "Look at this one! He angers his brother, and asks me to reconcile him! Go, for if you become righteous, he will be pleased with you." Jaʿfar rose, saddened by what he had encountered from him, and left. He went to ʿUmar b. Faraj, asking him to seal his document so that he could collect his stipends. ʿUmar met him with disappointment, took the document, and threw it into the courtyard of the mosque. Aḥmad b. Abī Khālid was present. He rose to leave, and Jaʿfar left with him. He said to him: "Did you see what ʿUmar did to me?" He said to him: "May I be your ransom! I am under his control, and he does not seal my document for my stipends except after kindness and requests. Send your agent to me." Jaʿfar sent his agent to him, and he gave him twenty thousand dirhams, saying: "Spend this until God arranges your affair." Then when al-Wāthiq became gravely ill, Ibn ʿAbd al-Malik advised in favor of al-Wāthiq's son. Then there was intense enmity between Ibn al-Zayyāt and Aḥmad b. Abī Duʾād. When al-Mutawakkil assumed power, Ibn Abī Duʾād incited him against him, along with old grudges. He ordered Itākh to arrest him, as previously mentioned. We have narrated that he used to say: "Mercy is a weakness in nature; I have never had mercy on anything." When he was placed in the oven, he said: "Have mercy on me!" They said to him: "Have you ever had mercy on anything?" Al-Qāsim b. Thābit al-Kātib said: My father narrated to me, saying: Aḥmad al-Aḥwal said to me: When Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik was arrested, I managed to reach him by subtle means. I saw him in heavy irons. I said: "What I see grieves me." He said: Ask the abodes of the tribe what changed them, And effaced them and erased their appearance. It is this world; when it turns, It turns its good into evil. This world is but a vanishing shadow; We praise God, for thus He has decreed it. Abū al-Ṭayyib Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Lakhmī said: My father narrated to me, saying: One of his companions narrated to me, saying: When Ibn al-Zayyāt was carried into the oven in which he died, he wrote these verses with a piece of charcoal: Who has a covenant with sleep, That he may guide the lovesick to it? May God have mercy on a merciful one Who directed my eyes to him. My eye stayed awake, while slept The eye of the one for whom I became insignificant. The compiler said: He died in the oven. It is also said that he was brought out and beaten, and died under the beating. The former is more reliable. When he died, he was thrown on a door and washed upon it. A grave was dug for him, but it was not made deep. It is mentioned that dogs dug him up and ate his flesh. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn b. ʿAwn b. Ziyād Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn b. ʿAwn b. Ziyād b. Bisṭām. It is also said: Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn b. Ghiyāth b. Ziyād b. ʿAwn b. Bisṭām, Abū Zakariyyā al-Murrī, from Ghaṭafān, a client of theirs. He was born in the year 158 AH, and was from the people of al-Anbār. He heard Ibn al-Mubārak, Hushaym, ʿĪsā b. Yūnus, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and others. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Abū Khaythamah, Muḥammad b. Saʿd, al-Bukhārī, and others narrated from him. He was a ḥāfiẓ, trustworthy, reliable, and precise. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: "The knowledge of people has ended with Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn." ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdī said: A shaykh who was a scribe in Baghdad informed me in the circle of Abū ʿImrān al-Ashyab. He mentioned that he was a paternal cousin of Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn. He said: Maʿīn was in charge of the land tax of al-Rayy. He died, leaving his son Yaḥyā one million and fifty thousand dirhams. He spent all of it on hadith. Aḥmad b. Rāfiʿ says: I heard Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal say: "Every hadith that Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn does not know is not a hadith." He said: Hārūn b. Maʿrūf said: A certain shaykh from Syria came to us. I was the first to go early to him. I entered upon him and asked him to dictate something to me. He took the book and began dictating to me. Then I noticed a man knocking on the door. The shaykh said: "Who is this?" He said: "Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal." He gave permission to him, while the shaykh remained in his state with the book in his hand, and did not move. Then another knocked on the door. The shaykh said: "Who is this?" He said: "Aḥmad al-Dawraqī." He gave permission to him, while the shaykh remained in his state with the book in his hand, not moving. Then a knocker knocked on the door. The shaykh said: "Who is this?" He said: "ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Rūmī." He gave permission to him, while the shaykh remained in his state with the book in his hand, not moving. Then another knocked on the door. The shaykh said: "Who is this?" He said: "Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr b. Ḥarb." He gave permission to him, while the shaykh remained in his state with the book in his hand, not moving. Then another knocked on the door. The shaykh said: "Who is this?" He said: "Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn." He said: I saw the shaykh's hand tremble and the book fall from it. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn died in al-Madīnah in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year while going to perform the pilgrimage. It is narrated that he left al-Madīnah, and he saw in a dream a speaker saying: "Do you desire to leave my neighborhood?" So he returned and stayed three days, then died. He was carried on the bier of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and it was announced before him: "This is the one who negates falsehood from the hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ." He was buried in al-Baqīʿ. He had reached seventy-six years minus a few days. One of the hadith scholars mourned him, saying: Gone is the one knowledgeable of the faults of every hadith transmitter, And of every differing chain of transmission, And of every error in hadith and every difficult matter That baffles the scholars of every land. Ḥubaysh b. Mubashshir said: I saw Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn in a dream and said: "What did God do with you?" He said: "He admitted me to His presence in His abode, and married me to three hundred houris. Then He said to the angels: 'Look at My servant, how he has become fresh and handsome.'" He said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh said: I heard my father say: Yaḥyā left behind one hundred qimṭar of books, and fourteen qimṭar, and four large jars filled with books. Umm ʿĪsā bt.
