Translation

✧ Then the year two hundred and twenty-nine entered. In this year, al-Wāthiq imprisoned the secretaries and imposed upon them enormous sums of money. He took from Aḥmad b. Isrāʾīl eighty thousand dinars after flogging him, from Sulaymān b. Wahb, the secretary of Ītākh, four hundred thousand dinars, from Ibrāhīm b. Rabāḥ and his secretaries one hundred thousand dinars, from Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb and his secretaries one million dinars, from Najāḥ sixty thousand dinars, and from Abū al-Wazīr one hundred and forty thousand dinars. The reason for that was that one night he sat with his companions and asked them about the downfall of the Barāmikah. ʿUrūd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Anṣārī related to him that a slave girl belonging to ʿAdūl the tailor, whom al-Rashīd wanted to buy, was purchased for one hundred thousand dinars, and he sent to Yaḥyā b. Khālid to give him that amount. Yaḥyā said: 'This is the key to evil. If he takes the price of a slave girl as one hundred thousand dinars, he is more likely to demand wealth in proportion to that.' So Yaḥyā sent to him: 'I am not able to provide this money.' Al-Rashīd became angry and repeated: 'It must be done.' So Yaḥyā sent its value in dirhams, and ordered that they be placed on al-Rashīd's path so that he might consider them excessive. He did so, and al-Rashīd passed by them and asked about them. He was told: 'This is the price of the slave girl.' He considered it excessive and ordered the slave girl to be returned. He said to a servant of his: 'Take this money into your keeping and establish for me a treasury to which I can add what I wish.' He named it 'the bridal treasury' (bayt māl al-ʿarūs). He then began investigating the wealth and found that the Barāmikah had been negligent with it. Among his boon companions there used to attend a man known as Abū al-ʿAwd, who had refinement. One night al-Rashīd ordered for him thirty thousand dirhams, but Yaḥyā delayed giving them to him. Abū al-ʿAwd contrived to incite al-Rashīd against the Barāmikah. It had become known that al-Rashīd had changed toward them. While he was one night with al-Rashīd conversing with him, he led the talk until he recited to him the verse of ʿUmar b. Abī Rabīʿah: Hind promised, but she never keeps her promise— Would that Hind had fulfilled for us what she promised. She acted arbitrarily once, For only the powerless man is he who does not act arbitrarily. Al-Rashīd said: 'Indeed, only the powerless man is he who does not act arbitrarily.' Yaḥyā had taken one of al-Rashīd's servants as a servant who would bring him news of him. He informed him of that. So he summoned Abū al-ʿAwd and gave him thirty thousand dirhams, and from himself twenty thousand dirhams. He sent to his two sons, al-Faḍl and Jaʿfar, and gave each of them twenty thousand. Al-Rashīd pursued their affair until he seized them. Al-Wāthiq said: 'My grandfather spoke truly, by God. Only the powerless man is he who does not act arbitrarily.' He then began speaking of embezzlement and what its perpetrators deserve. No more than a week passed before he brought them down. The appointment of some governors and who led the pilgrims that year In this year, Shīr Bāsabān was appointed over Yemen for Ītākh, and he set out to it. In this year, Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ b. al-ʿAbbās took charge of al-Madīnah. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd led the people in the pilgrimage. The killing of Gharsiyah and many polytheists in al-Andalus In it, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān equipped a large army and appointed over it his son Muḥammad, and dispatched him against Mūsā in the month of Ramaḍān of the year two hundred and twenty-nine. Muḥammad advanced to Banbalūnah and inflicted there a defeat upon a large gathering of polytheists. Gharsiyah and many polytheists were killed in it. Then Mūsā returned to opposing ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, so he equipped a great army and sent them against Mūsā. When Mūsā saw that, he sought peace, and it was granted to him. He gave his son Ismāʿīl as a hostage, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān appointed him governor of the city of Ṭuṭīlah. Mūsā set out to it and reached it, expelled everyone he feared, and settled there.
