Translation
✧ Then the year 227 AH commenced. Mention of the uprising of al-Mubarqaʿ In this year, Abū Ḥarb al-Mubarqaʿ al-Yamānī rose up in Palestine and rebelled against al-Muʿtaṣim. The reason for his uprising was that one of the soldiers wanted to lodge in his house while he was absent, and one of his women prevented him, so the soldier struck her with a whip and hit her forearm, leaving a mark on it. When he returned to his home, she complained to him about what the soldier had done to her. So he took his sword and went to him and killed him. Then he fled, covered his face with a veil (burquʿ), and made for one of the mountains of Jordan, where he took up residence. He used to appear by day veiled, and when anyone came to him he would remind him and enjoin upon him commanding right and forbidding wrong, and he would mention the caliph and what he was doing and criticize him. A group of the peasants of that area responded to him. He claimed that he was an Umayyad, and his companions said: "This is the Sufyānī." When his followers from this bank became numerous, he called upon the leading families, and a group of the chiefs of the Yemenis responded to him, among them a man called Ibn Bayhas who was obeyed among the people of Yemen, and two men from the people of Damascus. The news reached al-Muʿtaṣim during the illness in which he died, so he dispatched Rajāʾ b. Ayyūb al-Ḥaḍārī with about a thousand soldiers. He found him amid a great multitude reaching a hundred thousand, so Rajāʾ disliked engaging him and encamped opposite him until the time of sowing and working the land came, and those who were with al-Mubarqaʿ dispersed to their work, leaving him with about a thousand or two thousand. Al-Muʿtaṣim died and al-Wāthiq assumed power, and sedition broke out in Damascus. Al-Wāthiq commanded Rajāʾ to fight whoever intended sedition and a return to al-Mubarqaʿ, so he did that and then returned to al-Mubarqaʿ. Rajāʾ then fought him, and the two armies met. Rajāʾ said to his companions: "I see no man in his army with courage other than him, and he will show his companions what he has. When he charges at you, open a way for him." It was not long before al-Mubarqaʿ charged, and Rajāʾ's companions opened a way for him until he passed through them. Then he returned, and they opened a way for him until he reached his companions. Then he charged another time, and when he wanted to return, they surrounded him and took him captive. It was said: His uprising was in the year 226 AH, and that he rose in the districts of al-Ramla and came to be among fifty thousand. Al-Muʿtaṣim sent Rajāʾ al-Ḥaḍārī against him, and he fought him, took Ibn Bayhas captive, killed about twenty thousand of al-Mubarqaʿ's companions, captured al-Mubarqaʿ, and carried him to Sāmarrāʾ. The death of Theophilus, king of the Byzantines In this year, Theophilus, king of the Byzantines, perished. His reign had lasted twelve years, and after him his wife Theodora ruled, along with her son Michael b. Theophilus, who was a boy. Who led the pilgrimage for the people this year Jaʿfar b. al-Muʿtaṣim led the people on the pilgrimage, and the mother of al-Wāthiq performed the pilgrimage with him. She died at al-Ḥīra in Dhū al-Ḥijja and was buried in al-Kūfa. Mention of the sedition in Damascus When al-Muʿtaṣim died, the Qaysīs rose up in Damascus, committed depredations, spread corruption, and besieged their governor. Al-Wāthiq sent Rajāʾ b. Ayyūb al-Ḥaḍārī against them. They were encamped at Marj Rāhiṭ, and Rajāʾ encamped at Dayr Murrān and summoned them to obedience, but they did not return. So he appointed battle with them at Dūma on Monday. When Sunday came, and they were dispersed, Rajāʾ marched against them and came upon them while some of them had gone to Dūma and some were about their needs. He fought them, defeated them, and killed about one thousand five hundred of them, while about three hundred of his companions were killed. His commander Ibn Bayhas fled, and the situation in Damascus was set right. Then Rajāʾ marched to Palestine to fight Abū Ḥarb al-Mubarqaʿ, who had risen there, and fought him. Al-Mubarqaʿ was defeated and taken captive, as we have mentioned.
