وَقِيلَ إِنَّ مُخَالَفَةَ مَازِيَارَ كَانَتْ سَنَةَ خَمْسٍ وَعِشْرِينَ، ✧ Then the year 224 AH began. Mention of Māzyār's opposition in Ṭabaristān. In this year, Māzyār b. Qārūn b. Windād Hurmuz openly showed opposition to al-Muʿtaṣim in Ṭabaristān, rebelled, and fought his armies. The reason was that Māzyār was hostile to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir and would not deliver the land tax to him. Al-Muʿtaṣim would order him to deliver it to ʿAbd Allāh, and he would say, "I will deliver it only to you." Al-Muʿtaṣim would forward what he received from Māzyār's men at Hamadhān and hand it over to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir's agent, who would return it to Khurāsān. The evil between Māzyār and ʿAbd Allāh grew great. ʿAbd Allāh kept writing to al-Muʿtaṣim until he became alarmed at Māzyār. When al-Afshīn had overcome Bābak, and his standing with al-Muʿtaṣim had become great, he aspired to the governorship of Khurāsān. He wrote to Māzyār, seeking to win him over, showing him friendship, and informing him that al-Muʿtaṣim had promised him the governorship of Khurāsān. He hoped that if Māzyār rebelled, al-Muʿtaṣim would send him to fight him and appoint him over Khurāsān. This prompted Māzyār to rebel, abandon obedience, and seize the mountains of Ṭabaristān. Al-Muʿtaṣim wrote to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, ordering him to fight Māzyār. Al-Afshīn wrote to Māzyār, ordering him to fight ʿAbd Allāh, and informed him that he would be with al-Muʿtaṣim as he wished. Al-Afshīn had no doubt that Māzyār would stand against Ibn Ṭāhir, and that al-Muʿtaṣim would need to send him and armies other than his. When he rebelled, he summoned the people to pledge allegiance, and they pledged to him unwillingly. He took hostages and imprisoned them, and ordered the tenants of the estates to plunder their owners. Māzyār had also been corresponding with Bābak. Māzyār was concerned with collecting money by advancing the land tax and other means. In two months, he collected what had been taken in a year. Then he ordered a commander of his called Sarkhāstān, who seized the people of Āmul and the people of Sāriyah altogether and moved them to a mountain halfway between Sāriyah and Āmul called Hurmuzābādh, and imprisoned them there. Their number was twenty thousand. When he did that, he became firmly established in his affair. He ordered the destruction of the wall of Āmul, the wall of Sāriyah, and the wall of Ṭumays, and the walls were destroyed. Sarkhāstān built a wall from Ṭumays to the sea, about three miles long, which the Khosrows had built to prevent the Turks from raiding Ṭabaristān. He provided it with a moat. The people of Jurjān were alarmed and afraid, and some of them fled to Naysābūr. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir sent his paternal uncle al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muṣʿab with a large army to protect Jurjān, and ordered him to encamp at the moat that Sarkhāstān had made. He marched until he encamped there, and between him and Sarkhāstān, the holder of the moat, there was a standoff. Ibn Ṭāhir also sent Ḥayyān b. Jabalah with four thousand men to Qūmis, and he encamped on the border of the mountains of Sharwīn. Al-Muʿtaṣim sent from his own side Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muṣʿab, the brother of Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm, accompanied by al-Ḥasan b. Qārin al-Ṭabarī and those Ṭabarīs who were with him. He sent al-Manṣūr b. al-Ḥasan, the lord of Dunbāwand, to al-Rayy so that he might enter Ṭabaristān from the direction of al-Rayy, and he sent Abū al-Sāj to al-Lāriz and Dunbāwand. When the cavalry surrounded Māzyār from every side, Sarkhāstān's men were conversing with the men of al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, until some of them became familiar with one another. Some of al-Ḥasan's men plotted to enter the wall, and they entered it against Sarkhāstān's men while al-Ḥasan was unaware. When the people saw one another, they rose up. The news reached al-Ḥasan, and he began shouting at the men, trying to stop them out of fear for them, but they did not halt. They set up his banner over Sarkhāstān's camp. The news reached Sarkhāstān while he was in the bath, and he fled in an undergarment. When al-Ḥasan saw that his men had entered the wall, he said, "O God, they disobeyed me and obeyed You, so grant them victory." His men followed them until they entered the pass without any hindrance, and took possession of Sarkhāstān's camp. His brother Shahryār was taken prisoner, and the people turned back from pursuit when night overtook them. Al-Ḥasan killed Shahryār. Sarkhāstān went on foot, and thirst exhausted him. He dismounted from his beast and tied it. A man of his companions and a servant named Jaʿfar saw him. Sarkhāstān said, "Jaʿfar, give me water to drink, for I am perishing of thirst." He said, "I have nothing to give you to drink from." Jaʿfar said: A number of my companions gathered around me, and I said to them, "This devil has ruined us. Why do we not draw near to the sultan with him and obtain safety for ourselves?" So we rushed upon him and bound his arms. He said to them, "Take a hundred thousand dirhams from me and leave me, for the Arabs will not give you anything." They said, "Produce it." He said, "Go with me to my dwelling so that you may receive it, and I will give you pledges of good faith." They would not do so, and went with him toward al-Muʿtaṣim's camp. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn's cavalry met them, struck them, took him from them, and brought him to al-Ḥasan. He ordered that he be put to death, and he was killed. Sarkhāstān had with him a man from the people of Iraq called Abū Shās who composed poetry and kept close to him to learn Arab ways from him. When the Arab army fell upon Sarkhāstān, they plundered all that belonged to Abū Shās. He went out, took a jar of water and a cup, and cried, "Water for the wayfarer," and fled. He passed by the tent of al-Ḥasan's scribe, and his companions recognized him and brought him in. He honored him and treated him well, and said, "Compose poetry in praise of the amir." He said, "By God, nothing remains in my breast of the Book of God because of fear. How can I compose poetry well?" Al-Ḥasan sent Sarkhāstān's head to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. Ḥayyān b. Jabalah, a client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, had advanced with al-Ḥasan, as we mentioned, and was in the region of Ṭumays. He corresponded with Qārin b. Shahryār, the nephew of Māzyār, and encouraged him to seek the kingdom, guaranteeing that he would make him king over the mountains of his father and grandfather. Qārin was one of Māzyār's commanders, and Māzyār had sent him with his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Qārin and a number of his commanders. When Ḥayyān won him over, Qārin guaranteed to hand over to him the mountains and the city of Sāriyah up to the borders of Jurjān on this condition. Ḥayyān wrote about this to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, and he agreed to everything he asked. He ordered Ḥayyān not to advance deep until he was sure of Qārin's sincerity, lest there be deceit from him. Ḥayyān wrote to Qārin about ʿAbd Allāh's agreement. Qārin summoned his paternal uncle ʿAbd Allāh b. Qārin, Māzyār's brother, and all his commanders to his meal. When they laid down their weapons and felt at ease, his armed men surrounded them and bound their arms, and he sent them to Ḥayyān. When they came to him, he secured them, and rode with his men until he entered the mountains of Qārin. The news reached Māzyār, and he was grieved. Al-Qūhyār said to him, "In your prison are twenty thousand, including weavers, cobblers, and blacksmiths, and you have occupied yourself with them. You have been brought down from your place of safety and your own household. What will you do with these prisoners you have?" He said: So Māzyār released all whom he had imprisoned, summoned a group of the notables of his companions, and said to them, "Your houses are in the plain, and I fear that your women and property will be taken. Go and secure safety for yourselves." They did so. When the people of Sāriyah learned of the capture of Sarkhāstān and Ḥayyān's entry into the mountain of Sharwīn, they rose against Māzyār's governor in Sāriyah. He fled from them, and the people opened the prison and brought out those in it. Ḥayyān came to the city of Sāriyah. The news reached Qūhyār, Māzyār's brother, and he sent to Ḥayyān with Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. Ḥafṣ, seeking safety and requesting to be made king over the mountains of his father and grandfather in exchange for handing over Māzyār to him. He came before Ḥayyān accompanied by Aḥmad b. al-Ṣaqr, and they delivered the message. He agreed to that. When they returned, Ḥayyān saw a fine horse under Aḥmad, and sent and took it from him. Aḥmad was angered by that and said, "This weaver, this slave, does to an old man like me what he did!" Then he wrote to Qūhyār: "Woe to you! Why do you err in your affair and abandon one like al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, the paternal uncle of the amir ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, and enter into the protection of this slave, this weaver? You would hand over your brother to him, lower your own standing, and make al-Ḥasan resentful of you by abandoning him and inclining to a slave of his slaves." Qūhyār wrote to him: "I see that I have erred at the outset. I promised the man to come to him the day after tomorrow, and I do not feel safe, if I oppose him, that he will rise against me and shed my blood and seize my dwelling and property. If I fight him and kill some of his men, and blood is shed, everything we have done will be ruined, and enmity will arise." Aḥmad wrote to him: "When the appointed day comes, send to him a man of your household, and write to him that an illness has appeared that prevents me from moving, and that you are undergoing treatment for three days. If you recover, well and good; otherwise I will come to you in a litter. We will make him accept that." He agreed to that. Aḥmad b. al-Ṣaqr and Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. Ḥafṣ wrote to al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, who was at Ṭumays: "Come to us so that we may hand over Māzyār and the horses to you; otherwise it will escape you." They sent the letter to him with someone who urged him. When the letter arrived, he mounted at once and traveled the distance of three days in one night, and reached Sāriyah. When morning came, he advanced to Khurramābādh, the meeting place between Qūhyār and Ḥayyān. Ḥayyān heard the sound of al-Ḥasan's drums and met him a parasang away. Al-Ḥasan said to him, "What are you doing here? Why have you come to this place? You have opened the mountains of Sharwīn and left them. What assures you that their people will not act treacherously and undo all we have done? Return to them so that they cannot act treacherously if they intend it." Ḥayyān said, "I want to carry my baggage and take my men." Al-Ḥasan said to him, "Go on. I will send your baggage and your men after you." Ḥayyān departed at once, as he had ordered him. A letter came to him from ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir ordering him to encamp at Kūr, which is among the mountains of Windād Hurmuz and is their strongest, and where Māzyār's wealth was. ʿAbd Allāh ordered that Qārin not be prevented from taking whatever he wanted of the wealth and the mountains. Qārin carried off what was there and elsewhere of the wealth of Māzyār and Sarkhāstān. What Ḥayyān had accomplished fell apart because of his greed for that horse. Ḥayyān died after that, and ʿAbd Allāh sent in his place his paternal uncle Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muṣʿab. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn went to Khurramābādh, and Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. Ḥafṣ and Aḥmad b. al-Ṣaqr came to him. He thanked them and wrote to Qūhyār, and he came to him. Al-Ḥasan treated him well and honored him, and granted him all that he requested for himself. They agreed upon a day when Māzyār would appear before him. Qūhyār returned to Māzyār and informed him that he had obtained safety for him and secured guarantees. Al-Ḥasan rode on the appointed day at noon, accompanied by three Turkish servants. He took Ibrāhīm b. Mihrān to guide him on the road to Uram. When he approached it, Ibrāhīm became afraid and said, "This is a place that only a thousand horsemen would traverse." He shouted at him, "Go on!" He said: So I went on with my mind in turmoil until we reached Uram. He said, "Where is the road to Hurmuzābādh?" I said, "Over this mountain on this road." He said, "Go to it." I said, "God, God, have regard for yourself and for us and for these people with you." He shouted, "Go on, son of a vile woman!" I said, "Striking off my neck is dearer to me than that Māzyār should meet me and the amir ʿAbd Allāh should charge me with the offense." He rebuked me until I thought he would seize me. I went on in fear, and we came to Hurmuzābādh as the sun was yellowing. He dismounted and sat, and we were fasting. The cavalry had been cut off because he had ridden without the people's knowledge, and they learned of it after his departure. He said: We performed the sunset prayer, and night came on. Suddenly there were horsemen before whom candles were burning, coming from the road of Labūrah. Al-Ḥasan said, "Where is the road of Labūrah?" I said, "I see horsemen and lights upon it," while I was bewildered and could not grasp the truth of the matter until the lights drew near. I looked, and there was Māzyār with Qūhyār. They dismounted. Māzyār came forward and greeted al-Ḥasan, but he did not return the greeting. He said to two men of his companions, "Take him to you." They took him. At dawn, al-Ḥasan sent Māzyār with them to Sāriyah. Al-Ḥasan went to Hurmuzābādh, burned Māzyār's palace, plundered his wealth, went to Khurramābādh, and took Māzyār's brothers, and they were imprisoned there with guards set over them. He went to the city of Sāriyah and stayed there, and Māzyār was imprisoned. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muṣʿab came to al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, and he went with him to discuss the matter of the wealth belonging to Māzyār and his family. He wrote to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, and he ordered al-Ḥasan to hand over Māzyār and his family to Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm so that he might take them to al-Muʿtaṣim, and commanded him to inquire thoroughly into their wealth and secure it. He brought Māzyār and asked him about his wealth. He mentioned that it was with his treasurers, and Qūhyār guaranteed that and bore witness against himself. Māzyār said, "Bear witness against me that all the wealth I took was ninety-six thousand dinars, seventeen pieces of emerald, sixteen pieces of ruby, eight loads of various kinds of cloth, a crown, a gilded jeweled sword, a dagger of gold set with jewels, and a great casket full of jewels worth eighteen million dirhams. I have handed all that over to the treasurer of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir and his intelligence officer over the army." Māzyār had appointed this man to deliver them to al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn so that he might show the people and al-Muʿtaṣim that he had given him safety for himself, his wealth, and his children, and that he had granted him the mountains of his father. Al-Ḥasan refused to accept it, and he was the most abstinent of men. The next day, al-Ḥasan sent Māzyār to al-Muʿtaṣim with Yaʿqūb b. al-Manṣūr. Then al-Ḥasan ordered Qūhyār to take his mules to carry Māzyār's wealth upon them. He took them, and al-Ḥasan wanted to send an army with him, but he said, "I have no need of them." He set out with his pages, and when he opened the treasuries, took out the wealth and packed it for transport, the mamlūks of the Marzubān, who were Daylamites, fell upon him and said: 'You betrayed our master and delivered him to the Arabs, and now you come to carry off his wealth!' They were one thousand two hundred, so they seized him and bound him, and when night fell they killed him and plundered the wealth and the mules. The news reached al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, and he dispatched an army. Qārin also dispatched an army. Qārin's men captured a number of them, among whom was a cousin of Māzyār called Shahryār b. al-Maḍmaghān, who had been inciting them. He sent him to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, and he died at Qūmas. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm learned of their affair and sent after them, and they were captured and sent to the city of Sāriya. It is said that the reason for Māzyār's capture was a cousin of his named Qūhyār, to whom belonged the mountains of Ṭabaristān, while Māzyār had the plain. The mountains of Ṭabaristān are three: the mountain of Windād-Hurmuz, the mountain of his brother Windāsanjān, and the third, the mountain of Sharwīn b. Surkhāb. Māzyār grew powerful, and he sent for his cousin Qūhyār—it is also said he was his brother—and kept him at his court, appointing over the mountain a governor from his side called Durrī. When Māzyār rebelled and needed men, he summoned Qūhyār and said: 'You know your mountain better than anyone else.' He disclosed to him the affair of al-Afshīn and his correspondence, ordered him to return to his mountain and guard it, and ordered Durrī to come to him. Durrī came, and Māzyār attached troops to him and sent him to fight al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, the uncle of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. Māzyār supposed that he had secured the mountain through Qūhyār and secured the dangerous places through Durrī and his troops. The armies gathered against him as previously mentioned and drew near. Māzyār was in his city with a small band. The rancor in Qūhyār's heart against Māzyār and what he had done to him led him to correspond with al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, informing him of everything in his camp and of the correspondence with al-Afshīn. Al-Ḥasan sent Qūhyār's letter to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, who sent it to al-Muʿtaṣim. ʿAbd Allāh and al-Ḥasan wrote to Qūhyār promising him all that he desired, that his mountain would be restored to him, and that no one would dispute what was in his hands. He agreed and appointed a day on which he would surrender the mountain. When the appointed time came, al-Ḥasan advanced and fought Durrī. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir sent a large army, and they came to Qūhyār, who surrendered the mountain to them, and they entered it. Durrī was fighting al-Ḥasan, and Māzyār was in his palace. Māzyār was unaware until horsemen were at the gate of his palace, and they took him prisoner. It is also said that Māzyār was out hunting when they seized him and headed toward Durrī while he was fighting. Durrī and his companions were unaware until ʿAbd Allāh's army was behind them, with Māzyār among them. Durrī and his troops fled, but they were pursued and killed, and his head was taken and brought to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. Māzyār was also brought to him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir promised him that if he revealed al-Afshīn's letters, he would ask al-Muʿtaṣim to pardon him. Māzyār confessed and produced the letters before ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, who sent them to Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm and sent Māzyār along, ordering him not to deliver them except from his own hand to the hand of al-Muʿtaṣim. Isḥāq did so. Al-Muʿtaṣim asked Māzyār about the letters, but he denied them, so he beat him until he died and crucified him beside Bābak. It is said that Māzyār's rebellion was in the year 225 AH, but the first account is more correct, because his execution was in the year 225 AH. It is also said that he confessed to the letters. Account of the rebellion of Mankajūr, a relative of al-Afshīn When al-Afshīn had finished with Bābak and returned to Sāmarrā, he appointed over Adharbayjān his agent Mankajūr, one of his relatives. Mankajūr found in one of Bābak's villages a great treasure, of which al-Muʿtaṣim and al-Afshīn knew nothing. The postmaster wrote to al-Muʿtaṣim, and Mankajūr wrote denying it. They argued, and Mankajūr intended to kill him, but the people of Ardabīl prevented him, so Mankajūr fought them. This reached al-Muʿtaṣim, who ordered al-Afshīn to dismiss Mankajūr. He sent a commander with a large army. When the news reached Mankajūr, he renounced obedience, gathered the riffraff, and marched out of Ardabīl. The commander engaged him and defeated him. Mankajūr went to one of the fortresses of Adharbayjān that Bābak had ruined, rebuilt and repaired it, and fortified himself in it, remaining there for a month. Then his companions rose against him and handed him over to that commander, who brought him to Sāmarrā. Al-Muʿtaṣim imprisoned him and suspected al-Afshīn in his affair. His arrival was in the year 225 AH. It is said that the commander sent against Mankajūr was Bughā the Elder, and that Mankajūr came out to him under a safe-conduct. Account of the appointment of ʿAbd Allāh over al-Mawṣil and his killing In this year, a man from among the leaders of the Kurds named Jaʿfar b. Fahrajas rebelled in the districts of al-Mawṣil, and many Kurds and others seeking mischief followed him. Al-Muʿtaṣim appointed ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sayyid b. Anas al-Azdī over al-Mawṣil and ordered him to fight Jaʿfar. ʿAbd Allāh marched to al-Mawṣil. Jaʿfar was at Māniʿīsā and had taken control of it. ʿAbd Allāh went against him, fought him, and drove him out of Māniʿīsā. Jaʿfar headed for Mount Dāsin and took refuge in a high, inaccessible place, the road to which was narrow. ʿAbd Allāh went there and plunged into those defiles until he reached him and fought him. Jaʿfar and the Kurds with him prevailed over ʿAbd Allāh because of their knowledge of those places and their strength in fighting there on foot. ʿAbd Allāh was defeated, and most of those with him were killed. Among those who distinguished themselves was a man named Rabāḥ. He charged the Kurds, broke their line, thrust at them, killed, and got behind them, keeping them occupied so that those of his companions who could escape did so. The Kurds swarmed over him, and he threw himself from the top of the mountain on his horse. Below was a river, and the horse fell into the water while Rabāḥ escaped. Among those Jaʿfar captured were two men, one named Ismāʿīl and the other Isḥāq b. Anas, the uncle of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sayyid. Isḥāq was Jaʿfar's son-in-law. Jaʿfar brought them forward. Ismāʿīl thought that he would be killed and that Isḥāq would not be killed because of the marriage tie between them, so he said: 'Isḥāq, I entrust my children to you.' Isḥāq said to him: 'Do you think you will be killed and I will remain after you?' Then he turned to Jaʿfar and said: 'I ask you to kill me before him so that his soul may be at ease.' So he began with him and killed him, then killed Ismāʿīl after him. When this reached al-Muʿtaṣim, he ordered Ītākh to march against Jaʿfar and fight him. He prepared and marched to al-Mawṣil in the year 225 AH, heading for Mount Dāsin. His route was by Sūq al-Aḥad. He met Jaʿfar and fought him fiercely. Jaʿfar was killed, and his companions dispersed. His evil and harm to the people were ended. It is said that Jaʿfar drank poison he had with him and died. Ītākh fell upon the Kurds, killing many of them, plundering their property, and gathering the captives, women, and wealth to Takrīt. It is said that Ītākh's attack on Jaʿfar was in the year 226 AH, and God knows best.
