Translation

✧ Mention of those of the great who died in this year ʿUjayf b. ʿAnbasah ʿUjayf b. ʿAnbasah. A great commander among the commanders. We have mentioned in the events that he conspired against the caliph, so he was seized and denied water until he died. It is also reported that he was killed and thrown beneath a wall. [Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us, al-Tanūkhī informed us, from his father, who reported from Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl al-Jurjānī that he spoke during his vizierate for al-Muʿtaṣim, saying: I was in charge of the estates of ʿUjayf—and he was one of the commanders—and it was reported to him that I had come and removed the estates, so he sent for me. I was brought in to him while he was walking about in his residence among estates therein. When he saw me, he reviled me and said: 'You have ruined the estates and plundered the revenue?! By God, I will surely kill you. Bring the swordsman.' He was brought, and I was put aside for the blow. When I saw that, my reason left me and I urinated on my legs. His secretary looked at me and said: 'May God honor the emir. You are preoccupied with this building, and striking or killing this man is in our hands and will not escape. Command that he be imprisoned, and look into his affair. If the report is true, his punishment will not escape you; and if it is false, you will not hasten into sin and be cut off from the important matter you are pursuing.' So he ordered me to prison. I remained for some days, and al-Muʿtaṣim killed ʿUjayf. The news reached his secretary, and he released me. I went out, not guiding myself to a single silver grain or anything above it. I made for the head of the dīwān at Surra man raʾā, and he was pleased at my release and entrusted me with a task. I lodged in a house, and I saw its bath was not clean, and there was a mound, so I sat urinating on it. The owner of the house came out and said to me: 'Do you know what you have urinated on?' I said: 'On a mound of earth.' He laughed and said: 'This is a man of the sultan's commanders known as ʿUjayf. He incurred anger, and he was brought in chains. When he arrived here, he was killed and thrown in this place beneath a wall. When the army departed, we threw down the wall to conceal him from the dogs. By God, he is beneath this mound of earth.' He said: I marveled at my urinating out of fear of him and at my urinating on his grave.] Aḥmad b. al-Ḥakam Abū ʿAlī al-ʿAbdī Aḥmad b. al-Ḥakam Abū ʿAlī al-ʿAbdī [al-Baghdādī].
