The story of ʿĪsā b. Maryam (peace be upon him)
Translation
✧ Among the events during the time of ʿĪsā ﷺ is that the land became barren, so he went out to pray for rain: From Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: ʿĪsā b. Maryam went out to pray for rain with the people, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: “No sinner should pray for rain with you.” So he informed them of that and said: “Whoever is among the people of sins, let him withdraw.” All the people withdrew except one man afflicted in his right eye. ʿĪsā said to him: “What is the matter with you that you do not withdraw?” He said: “O Spirit of Allah, I have not disobeyed Allah for the blink of an [eye]. I glanced with this eye of mine at the foot of a woman without intending to look at her, so I gouged it out; and had I looked at her with the left one, I would have gouged it out.” He (Ibn ʿAbbās) said: ʿĪsā wept until his beard was wet with his tears, then he said: “Then supplicate, for you are more deserving of supplication than I. Indeed, I am protected by revelation, but you have not been protected [and yet did not disobey].” So the man came forward, raised his hands, and said: “O Allah, You created us and You knew what we would do before You created us, yet that did not prevent You from creating us. So just as You created us and undertook our provisions, send the sky down upon us in abundant rain.” By the One in Whose hand is the soul of ʿĪsā, the words had not fully left his mouth before the sky let loose its spouts, and both the settled people and the nomads were given water.
