✧ Mention of the disagreement of Faḍl against Ziyādat Allāh In this year, Ziyādat Allāh b. al-Aghlab, the ruler of Ifrīqiyyah, dispatched an army to fight Faḍl b. Abī al-ʿAnbar in al-Jazīrah, because Faḍl was in opposition to Ziyādat Allāh. Faḍl sought reinforcement from ʿAbd al-Salām b. al-Mufarrij al-Rabʿī, who was also in opposition since the time of the fitnah of Manṣūr, as we have mentioned. So he marched to him, and they met the army of Ziyādat Allāh. A fierce battle took place between the two parties near the city of the Jews in al-Jazīrah, in which ʿAbd al-Salām was killed, and his head was carried to Ziyādat Allāh. Then Faḍl b. Abī al-ʿAnbar went to the city of Tunis and entered it, fortifying himself there. Ziyādat Allāh sent an army against him, and they besieged Faḍl there, tightening their grip on him until they took the city from him. When the army entered, many of its inhabitants were killed; among them was ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd al-Faqīh. He had entered his house and did not fight, but some of the soldiers came in upon him, so he took up his sword and went out crying, "Jihad!" and was killed. His body remained lying in a ruin for seven days, untouched by any fanged or clawed beast. He had heard ḥadīth from Ibn ʿUyaynah and others, and he was one of the righteous. Many of the people of Tunis fled when the city was captured, but then Ziyādat Allāh granted them safety, and they returned to it.
