✧ [The Death of al-Maʾmūn] In this year: al-Maʾmūn died, and allegiance was pledged to al-Muʿtaṣim. Chapter on the Caliphate of al-Muʿtaṣim His name is Muḥammad b. Hārūn al-Rashīd, and he was given the kunya Abū Isḥāq. His mother was an umm walad from among the women born in al-Kūfa, named Mārida; she did not live to see his caliphate, and she was the most favored of women with al-Rashīd. He was fair-skinned, with a reddish-blond beard that was long, of medium height, ruddy-complexioned, with handsome eyes. He was called “the Eighth.” Aḥmad b. al-Barāʾ said: al-Muʿtaṣim bi-llāh, Abū Isḥāq Muḥammad b. al-Rashīd, was born in al-Khuld in the year 180 AH, in the eighth month. He was the eighth of the caliphs, and the eighth of the descendants of al-ʿAbbās. He achieved eight conquests, and eight sons and eight daughters were born to him. He died at al-Khāqānī in Surra man raʾā, and his age was forty-eight years. His caliphate lasted eight years and eight months [and two days. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said]: and eight days. He left in gold eight thousand thousand dinars and the like in silver. He died with eight nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, and his famous conquests were eight. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿArafa said: al-Muʿtaṣim was the eighth of the caliphs of the Banū al-ʿAbbās, and the eighth of the commanders of the faithful from the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. He ruled eight years and eight months, and achieved eight conquests: the land of Bābak at the hand of al-Afshīn, he conquered ʿAmmūriyya in person, the Zutt by ʿUjayf, the Sea of al-Baṣra, the fortress of al-Aḥrāf, the Arabs of Diyār Rabīʿa, al-Shārī, and the conquest of Egypt. He killed eight enemies: Bābak, Māzyār, [Bāṭas, the chief of the zanādiqa, al-Afshīn, ʿUjayf, Qārin, and the leader of the Rāfiḍa. He ought to be the eighth of the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib because he is: al-Muʿtaṣim b. al-Rashīd b. al-Mahdī b. al-Manṣūr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib]. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī related that the kings never assembled at the gate of anyone as they assembled at the gate of al-Muʿtaṣim, nor did any king attain such victories as his: he captured Bābak, king of Adharbayjān; al-Māzyār, king of Ṭabaristān; Bāṭis, king of ʿAmmūriyya; al-Afshīn, king of Ashrūsana; and ʿUjayf—who was a king. To his gate came the king of Farghāna, the king of Asīshāb, the king of Ṭakhāristān, the king of Aṣbahān, the king of al-Ṣughd, the king of Kābul; and Bāṭīs, the chief of the zanādiqa, al-Afshīn, ʿUjayf, Qārin, and the leader of the Rāfiḍa. When allegiance was pledged to him, the troops rioted and called out the name of al-ʿAbbās b. al-Maʾmūn. Al-Muʿtaṣim sent for him and brought him, and he pledged allegiance to him. Then he went out to the troops and said: “What is this lukewarm affection? I have pledged allegiance to my uncle.” So they fell silent, and he departed to Baghdād, accompanied by al-ʿAbbās b. al-Maʾmūn, and arrived there at the beginning of the month of Ramaḍān.
