Translation

✧ Mention of the death of al-Maʾmūn, his age, and his description In this year, al-Maʾmūn died with twelve nights remaining of Rajab. When his illness became severe and death attended him, there was someone with him to prompt him, and he offered him the shahādah while Ibn Māsawayh the physician was with him. He said to that man: 'Leave him, for in this state he does not distinguish between his Lord and Mānī.' Al-Maʾmūn opened his eyes and wanted to strike him, but he was unable to do so. He wanted to speak, but he was unable. Then he spoke and said: 'O You who does not die, have mercy on one who dies.' Then he died on the spot. When he died, his son al-ʿAbbās and his brother al-Muʿtaṣim carried him to Ṭarsūs, and they buried him in the house of Khāqān, the servant of al-Rashīd. Al-Muʿtaṣim prayed over him, and they appointed a guard over him from the sons of the people of Ṭarsūs and others, one hundred men, and each man among them was given ninety dirhams. His caliphate lasted twenty years, five months, and twenty days, excluding the years in which he was proclaimed in Makkah while his brother al-Amīn was besieged in Baghdādh. He was born on the middle of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year one hundred and seventy. His kunyah was Abū al-ʿAbbās. He was of medium height, fair-skinned, handsome, with a long, thin beard which greyness had streaked. It was also said: he was brown, with a yellowish tinge, with a hooked nose, wide-eyed, with a narrow forehead, and on his cheek was a black mole.
