✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 1220 - Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Abū al-Ḥasan. He was among the leading and most eminent of Banū Hāshim, and he was one of the tall men who dyed with henna. He died in Baghdad in this year. 1221 - Al-Ḥasan b. Siwār, Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Baghawī. He narrated from al-Layth and al-Mubārak b. Faḍāla. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in Khurāsān. 1222 - Al-Ḥusayn b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥurr, Abū ʿAlī, nicknamed Ashkāb. He heard Ḥammād b. Zayd and Sharīk b. ʿAbd Allāh. ʿAbbās al-Dūrī narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He said: Al-Ḥusayn b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥurr was from the sons of the people of Khurāsān, from the people of Nasā. His father was among those who went out in the call of the family of al-ʿAbbās with Asad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān who appeared in Nasā and was made chief, and Asad governed Iṣbahān in the year 145. Al-Ḥusayn grew up in Baghdad, sought ḥadīth, and kept to Abū Yūsuf the judge, so he became connected to the governor. Then he withdrew from them and did not enter into anything of the judiciary or otherwise. He remained in Baghdad, consulted for ḥadīth and fiqh, until he died in the year 216 during the caliphate of al-Maʾmūn, at the age of seventy-one. 1223 - Zubayda bt. Jaʿfar b. Abī Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, known as Umm Jaʿfar and Amat al-ʿAzīz. She was born in the time of al-Manṣūr, who used to bounce her and say: "You are cream and you are Zubayda," and that name prevailed over her. She was the wife of Hārūn al-Rashīd and the mother of al-Amīn. Among the daughters of Hāshim, no ʿAbbāsid woman gave birth to a caliph except her. Al-Rashīd [had] complained to ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī that Zubayda did not conceive from him, and he said: "Make her jealous, for Ibrāhīm the Friend ﷺ had Sārah who did not conceive from him, and Hājar conceived, so she became jealous and conceived Isḥāq ﷺ." So Zubayda became jealous of Marājil and conceived al-Amīn. She was well-known for goodness and generosity to scholars and the poor, and she had many monuments on the road to Makkah and Madinah and the two sanctuaries. She brought water from miles away until she channeled it between the lawful and sanctuary areas, and she endowed her wealth for the maintenance of the two sanctuaries. Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān said: Umm Jaʿfar performed the pilgrimage, and her expenditure in sixty days reached fifty-four million [dinars]. Her agent brought her the account of expenditure, and she forbade him [from that], saying to him: "God's reward is without reckoning." It has reached us that the agent of Umm Jaʿfar imprisoned a man who used to oversee her estates and had taken from their revenues a sum amounting to two hundred thousand dirhams. The imprisoned man sent to two friends of his asking them to intercede with the agent on his behalf. Al-Fayḍ b. Abī Ṣāliḥ met them and said: "Where are you going?" They said: "We are going to such-and-such." He said: "Do you need me to help you?" They said: "Yes." So he went with them, and the agent wrote to Umm Jaʿfar informing her of the situation. She said: "There is no way to release him until he pays what he owes." They resolved to leave, so al-Fayḍ said: "It seems we have only come to confirm the man's imprisonment," [and took the inkwell] and wrote to his own agent to pay the money. The agent of Umm Jaʿfar wrote to her about the situation, and she endorsed on the back of his note: "We are more entitled to this noble deed than al-Fayḍ, so return to him his share and hand over the man to him." From al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ, who said: The Commander of the Faithful al-Rashīd came out from Zubayda's place after having lunch with her and sleeping, and he was laughing. I said: "The Commander of the Faithful's joy has pleased me." He said: "Nothing makes me laugh except amazement at this woman. I ate with her and slept, then I heard a ringing sound. I asked: 'What is this?' They said: 'Three hundred thousand dinars have arrived from Egypt.' She said: 'Give them to me, O cousin.' So I gave them to her. She had scarcely left when she became saucy and said: 'What good have I ever seen from you?'" Umm Jaʿfar died in Baghdad in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak al-Zamin said: I saw Zubayda in a dream and asked: "What has God done with you?" She said: "He forgave me for the first pickaxe struck on the road to Makkah." I said: "What is this yellowness in your face?" She said: "A man called Bishr al-Marīsī was buried among us. Hell breathed a breath upon him that made my body shudder, and this yellowness is from that breath." 1224 - ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. al-Nuʿmān, Abū Muḥammad al-Bazzāz al-Nasāʾī. He lived in Baghdad and narrated there from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, Shuʿba, and Ḥamza al-Zayyāt. ʿAbbās al-Dūrī narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in this year. 1225 - Muḥammad b. al-Ḥajjāj, mawlā of al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad al-Hāshimī, known as Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and it is said Abū Jaʿfar, known as al-Muṣaffar. He narrated from Shuʿba and al-Darāwardī. Aḥmad abandoned his ḥadīth, and Yaḥyā said: Yaḥyā said: He is not trustworthy. Abū Zurʿa said: He narrates falsehoods from Shuʿba and al-Darāwardī. The compiler said: He was a Shīʿī. He died in this year. 1226 - Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbbād b. Ḥabīb b. al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufra al-Azdī al-Baṣrī, and the name of Abū Ṣufra is Ẓālim b. Sarrāq. Muḥammad used to lead prayer and hold command in al-Baṣra. He came to Baghdad and narrated from his father, from Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī and Hushaym. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, al-Kudaymī, Abū al-ʿAynāʾ, and others narrated from him. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād came to us, so we went to him and heard from him. He was not well-versed in ḥadīth. He narrated a ḥadīth to us and said: "The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed a cat (hirra)." He erred; the bāʾ had merely stuck to the qāf. Al-Maʾmūn said to Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād: "I wanted to appoint you, but your extravagance with wealth prevented me." Muḥammad said: "Withholding what one has is a bad opinion of the Worshiped." Al-Maʾmūn said to him: "If you wished, you could preserve yourself, for what you spend is unlikely to return." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, one who has a wealthy master never becomes poor." Al-Maʾmūn admired that from him and said to the people: "Whoever wants to honor me, let him honor my guest Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād." Wealth came to him from every direction, and he did not remain with even a dirham of it. He said: "The generous man is not seasoned by experience." Al-Maʾmūn said to Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād: "O Muḥammad, it has reached me that no one comes to al-Baṣra without entering your guest house before he finishes his errands. How can you manage this?" He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, withholding what one has is a bad opinion of the Worshiped." [Al-Maʾmūn admired that from him] and sent him a sum amounting to six million dirhams. He died owing fifty thousand dinars. Al-Maʾmūn said: "O Muḥammad, how many are those who disparage the family of al-Muhallab!" He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, they are as the poet said: The cranes are met with envy, while you see no enviers of the base among people." Al-Mughīra said: This verse is from a poem with which ʿUmar b. Lajaʾ praised Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and the opening of the poem is: The family of al-Muhallab are a people, if you trace their lineage, they were the noblest in fathers and grandfathers. How many an envier do they have, out of malice for their excellence, though he never approached their splendid deeds nor came close. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: When Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād [b. al-Muhallab] was dying, a group of his people who envied him entered. When they left, he recited: Men wished that I would die, and if I die, that is a path in which I am not alone. The life of one who seeks to oppose me does not harm me, and the death of one who goes before me does not make me immortal. So say to the one who seeks the opposite of what has passed: prepare for another like it, for it is as if it has already happened. From al-Ghallābī, who said: It was said to al-ʿUtbī: "Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād has died." He said: "We have died by losing him, while he lives on through his glory." 1227 - Mūsā b. Dāwūd, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḍabbī al-Ḥalfānī. Of Kufan origin, he lived in Baghdad and narrated there from Mālik, Shuʿba, al-Thawrī, and al-Layth. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal narrated from him, and he was trustworthy, reliable, and a compiler. He held judgeship of the frontier regions and was praised there. He died in this year at al-Maṣṣīṣa. End of the copyist's note, end of the tenth part. Following it in the next part: Then the year 217 began. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, and may God bless our master Muḥammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and his family and companions with abundant peace, and may God be pleased with all the companions of the Messenger of God. That was in the last ten days of the honored month of Ramaḍān, in the year 804, may God make its conclusion good in well-being by His grace and generosity, and forgive the one who asked for its copying, the one who copied it, the one who examined it, and who prayed for them and for the Muslims for forgiveness and mercy, and for all Muslims. Amen, amen, amen. God suffices us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.
