Translation
✧ Then the year two hundred and twelve entered. Account of Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd’s seizure of al-Mawṣil In this year, al-Maʾmūn dispatched Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd al-Ṭūsī against Bābak al-Khurramī to fight him, and commanded him to make his route via al-Mawṣil in order to set its affairs aright and to fight Zurayq b. ʿAlī. So Muḥammad marched to al-Mawṣil with his army, gathered the men who were in it from Yemen and Rabīʿah, and set out to fight Zurayq, accompanied by Muḥammad b. al-Sayyid b. Anas al-Azdī. The news reached Zurayq, so he marched toward them, and they met at al-Zābb. Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd corresponded with him, summoning him to obedience, but he refused. So Muḥammad engaged him, and they fought, and the fighting of al-Azdī with Muḥammad b. al-Sayyid intensified, seeking vengeance for al-Sayyid. Then Zurayq and his companions were defeated. After that, he sent asking for safe-conduct, so Muḥammad granted him safety, and he came down to him, and he sent him to al-Maʾmūn. And al-Maʾmūn wrote to Muḥammad commanding him to seize all of Zurayq’s wealth, including villages, rural estates, money, and other things, so he took that for himself. Then Muḥammad gathered the sons of Zurayq and his brothers and informed them of what al-Maʾmūn had commanded, so they submitted to that. He said to them: “The Commander of the Faithful has commanded me regarding it, and I have accepted what he bestowed upon me from it and returned it to you.” So they thanked him for that. Then he marched to Adharbayjān, appointing Muḥammad b. al-Sayyid as his deputy over al-Mawṣil. He headed to the dissenters who had seized control of Adharbayjān, and he seized them, among them Yaʿlā b. Murrah and his peers, and sent them to al-Maʾmūn. Then he marched toward Bābak al-Khurramī to fight him.
