Translation

✧ Mention of ʿAbd Allāh's conquest of Alexandria In this year, ʿAbd Allāh expelled those from the people of al-Andalus who had seized control of Alexandria, granting them safe-conduct. They had come in ships from al-Andalus in a group while the people were in the turmoil of Ibn al-Sarī and others. They anchored at Alexandria, their leader being called Abū Ḥafṣ, and they remained there until Ibn Ṭāhir arrived. He sent word warning them of war if they did not enter into obedience, so they answered him and asked him for safe-conduct on condition that they depart from it to some of the frontiers of the Byzantines that are not part of the lands of Islam. He granted them safe-conduct on that condition, so they departed and settled on the island of Crete, taking it as their abode and residing there, and they left descendants and multiplied. Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā said: A young man from the East came to us—meaning Ibn Ṭāhir—while the world among us was afflicted with strife. A usurper had seized control of every region of our lands, and the people were in tribulation. He set the world aright, secured the innocent, struck fear into the corrupt, and the subjects became compliant to him in obedience.
