✧ Then the year two hundred and nine entered. Mention of the victory over Naṣr b. Shabath In this year, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir besieged Naṣr b. Shabath in Kaysūm and pressed him hard until he sought a guarantee of safety. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-ʿĀmirī said: Al-Maʾmūn said to Thumāma b. Ashras: "Will you not guide me to a man from the people of al-Jazīra who has intelligence and eloquence to convey on my behalf what I deem obligatory to Naṣr?" He said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-ʿĀmirī." So he ordered me to be brought, and I came. He spoke to me with words that he commanded me to convey to Naṣr, who was at Kafar ʿAzūn, near Sarūj. So I conveyed them to Naṣr, and he submitted and stipulated conditions, among them that he would not tread upon his carpet. Al-Maʾmūn did not grant him that, and said: "What is the matter with him that he shuns me?" I said: "Because of his crime and his previous sin." He said: "Do you consider him greater in crime than al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ and ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad b. Abī Khālid? As for al-Faḍl, he took my commanders, my wealth, my weapons, and all that al-Rashīd had bequeathed to me, and went with it to my brother Muḥammad, leaving me in Marw alone and solitary, and surrendered me, and corrupted my brother against me until what happened happened; and that was harder upon me than everything. As for ʿĪsā b. Abī Khālid, he expelled my deputy from my city and the city of my forefathers, took away my land tax and my fayʾ, destroyed my house, and seated Ibrāhīm as caliph in my place." He said: I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, do you permit me to speak?" He said: "Speak." He said: I said: "As for al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ, he is the beneficiary of your favor and your client, and the standing of his ancestors is their standing, so you return to him by various means, all of which bring you back to him. As for ʿĪsā, he is a man of your state, and his prior service and the prior service of those of his forebears who have passed are well known, and he returns upon that. As for Naṣr, he is a man who has never had a hand in service, such that he could be borne with like these, for those of his forebears who have passed; rather, they were among the soldiers of the Umayyads." He said: "It is as you say, but I will not desist from him until he treads upon my carpet." He said: So I conveyed that to Naṣr, and he shouted to the horses, and they wheeled toward him, and he said: "Woe to me because of him! He was not able to prevail over four hundred frogs under his wing—meaning the Zuṭṭ—and he can prevail over me with the race of the Arabs?" Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir pressed the fighting against him and squeezed him, so he sought a guarantee of safety, and he granted it to him. He moved from his encampment to al-Raqqa and went over to ʿAbd Allāh. The duration of his siege and warfare was five years. When he came out to him, ʿAbd Allāh destroyed the fortress of Kaysūm and sent Naṣr to al-Maʾmūn, and he reached him in Ṣafar of the year two hundred and ten.
