Translation

✧ In this year died Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muṣʿab, governor of Iraq in its entirety and of Khurasan in its entirety. He was found dead in his bed after praying the late ʿishāʾ prayer and wrapping himself in the bedcovers. His household deemed his coming out for the dawn prayer slow, so his brother and his paternal uncle entered upon him and found him dead. When his death reached al-Maʾmūn, he said: "To the two hands and to the mouth. Praise be to God, who has advanced him and deferred us." That is because it had reached him that one day he had delivered a sermon and had not prayed for him from atop the pulpit. Yet, along with this, he appointed his son ʿAbd Allāh in his place, with the addition of the land of al-Jazīrah and Syria to his governorship. ʿAbd Allāh then appointed as his deputy over Khurasan his brother Ṭalḥah b. Ṭāhir for seven years. Then Ṭalḥah died, and ʿAbd Allāh took sole charge of all those lands. ʿAbd Allāh's deputy over Baghdad was Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm. Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn was the one who had wrested Baghdad and the land of Iraq in its entirety from the hand of al-Amīn b. al-Rashīd and had also killed him, and the matter was set aright for al-Maʾmūn, as we have mentioned in the year 195. This Ṭāhir entered one day upon al-Maʾmūn and asked him for a need, and he granted it to him. Then al-Maʾmūn looked at him and his eyes welled up, so Ṭāhir said to him: "What makes you weep, O Commander of the Faithful?" But he did not inform him. So Ṭāhir gave the servant Ḥusayn two hundred thousand dirhams so that he might learn for him what the story of his weeping was. He said to him: "Do not inform anyone of it, or I shall kill you. I remembered the killing of my brother and the humiliation that befell him at the hands of Ṭāhir, and by God, he shall not escape me." When Ṭāhir ascertained that, he strove to be transferred away from before him, and he did not cease until he appointed him over Khurasan and gave him one of his servants, enjoining the servant that if he saw from him anything suspect, he should poison him. When Ṭāhir delivered the Friday sermon and did not pray for al-Maʾmūn, the servant poisoned him in a condiment, and he died that very night. This Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn was called Dhū al-Yamīnayn ("the one with two right hands"). He was one-eyed. ʿAmr b. Bānah said of him: O you of two right hands and a single eye, A missing eye and a right hand that is extra. There was disagreement about the meaning of his being Dhū al-Yamīnayn. It was said: because he struck a man with his left hand and cut him in two. It is also possible that he was given that title because he governed Iraq and Khurasan. He was generous, praised, loved poetry, and rewarded it abundantly. One day he rode in a ḥarrāqah (river barge), and a poet said of him: I marvel at the barge of Ibn al-Ḥusayn: It does not sink—how can it not sink? Two seas are upon it: one above it, And another below it, pressing down. And more wondrous than that are its planks, Which the water touches—how do they not sprout leaves? So he rewarded him with three thousand dinars, and said: "If you give us more, we shall give you more." Ibn Khillikān said: How excellent is what one of the poets said about one of the leaders when he embarked upon the sea: When he mounted the sea, I entreated God in supplication: O You who send the winds with Your graciousness, You have made his generosity from his palm Like its waves, so keep him safe and make its waves like his palm. Al-Qāḍī Ibn Khillikān said: This Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn died on Saturday, five nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, in the year 207. He was born in the year 159. The one who traveled to his son ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, while he was in the land of al-Raqqah, to console him for his father and congratulate him on the governorship of those lands, was al-Qāḍī Yaḥyā b. Aktham, at the command of al-Maʾmūn.
