Translation

✧ Mention of the expedition against the Franks In this year, al-Ḥakam, the amīr of al-Andalus, equipped an army under ʿAbd al-Karīm b. Mughīth for the land of the Franks in al-Andalus. He marched with the troops until he entered their territory and penetrated into the midst of their country. He laid it waste, plundered it, and destroyed several of their fortresses. [And he] every time he destroyed one place, he moved on to another, and he exhausted the treasuries of their kings. When their king saw what the Muslims were doing to his lands, he wrote to the kings of all the surrounding regions seeking their aid. Christians gathered to him from every direction, and he advanced with great hosts facing the Muslim army, with a river between them. They fought a fierce battle for several days, the Muslims seeking to cross the river while they prevented the Muslims from doing so. When the Muslims saw that, they withdrew from the river, and the polytheists crossed over to them. They fought the greatest of battles, and the polytheists were routed toward the river. The sword and captivity took them: whoever crossed the river was saved, and a group of their counts, kings, and bishops were taken captive. The Franks returned to hold the riverbank, preventing the Muslims from crossing. They remained thus for thirteen days, fighting every day. Then rains came, the river rose, and crossing became impossible. So ʿAbd al-Karīm turned back from them on the seventh of Dhū al-Ḥijjah.
