✧ Mention of the prominent figures who died in this year 1088 - Isḥāq b. Sulaymān, Abū Yaḥyā al-ʿAbdī al-Kūfī. A client of ʿAbd al-Qays. He heard from Mālik, al-Thawrī, and others. Qutaybah and Abū Kurayb narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He moved to al-Rayy and settled there, and was attributed to it. He was trustworthy, righteous, pious, outwardly humble, given to much weeping. He came to Baghdad in this year and narrated there, and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal heard him. Then he returned to al-Rayy and died there. 1089 - Asbāṭ b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. Maysarah, Abū Muḥammad al-Qurashī, client of al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd. From the people of al-Kūfah. He was born in the year 105. He heard Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī, al-Aʿmash, al-Thawrī, and others. Qutaybah and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal narrated from him. Yaḥyā said: He is trustworthy, but the Kufans weaken him. He died in this year. It is also said: at the beginning of the year 200. 1090 - Al-Ḥakam b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muṭīʿ al-Balkhī. He narrated from Hishām b. Ḥassān, Bakr b. Ḥubaysh, Mālik, and Sufyān. Aḥmad b. Manīʿ narrated from him. He was among the people of opinion, and he held the judiciary of Balkh. Yaḥyā said: He is weak, and nothing. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said, when he was asked about him: It is not appropriate to narrate from him; leave him. Indeed he said: Paradise and Hell were created and they will perish. This is the speech of Jahm; nothing should be narrated from him. Abū Dāwūd said: They abandoned his ḥadīth; he was a Jahmī. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. 1091 - Sulaymān b. Abī Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, whose kunyah is Abū Ayyūb. He narrated from his father, and to him is attributed Darb Sulaymān in Baghdad. He died in this year in Ṣafar, at the age of fifty. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Sharawī, the steward of Sulaymān b. Abī Jaʿfar, said: Hārūn al-Rashīd entered upon Sulaymān b. Abī Jaʿfar while he was ill. He saw a slave girl named Ḍaʿīfah, in the utmost beauty, loveliness, and form, [and she fell into his heart]. He [Hārūn] said: Give her to me. He said: She is yours, O Commander of the Faithful. When he took her, Sulaymān fell ill from the intensity of his love for her, and he said: I complain to the Lord of the Throne of what I have met from the affair of the Caliph. His justice encompasses all creation, yet he desires to wrong me concerning Ḍaʿīfah. The heart has clung to her love like the sea clings to the written page. He said: This reached Hārūn al-Rashīd, and he returned her to him. 1092 - Shuʿayb b. al-Layth, Abū ʿAbd al-Malik. He was born in the year 135. He narrated from his father and others. Bakkār, and he would smooth it with his hand and say: By God, you are indeed pleasant; by God, you are indeed cool; I will not mount you tonight. He would pray the morning prayer with the ablution of the night prayer. [Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said:] ʿAlī narrated with chains from Hishām b. Ḥassān, Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, and others, and he accompanied Ibrāhīm b. Adham. It has reached us that he was wounded in one of his campaigns, and his intestines came out onto the pommel of his saddle. He pushed them back into his belly, bound them with his turban, and fought until he had killed thirteen infidels. He died at al-Maṣṣīṣah in this year. 1094 - ʿĀmir b. Ḥamzah, client of Banū Hāshim. He was of the descendants of ʿIkrimah, client of Ibn ʿAbbās. It is also said: He is ʿImārah b. Ḥamzah b. Mālik b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh, client of al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. He was one of the eloquent secretaries, and he was the most arrogant of people, so much so that a proverb was coined about his arrogance: "More arrogant than ʿImārah." He was generous, and to him is attributed Dār ʿImārah in Baghdad. Ibrāhīm b. Dāwūd said: Some people sought permission to enter upon ʿImārah b. Ḥamzah to intercede with him regarding kindness to a people who had been struck by need. He had risen from his assembly, and his chamberlain informed him of their need. He ordered for them one hundred thousand dirhams. They gathered to enter upon him to thank him, and his chamberlain told him, and he said: Convey to them the greeting of peace and tell them: I have lifted from you the humiliation of asking, so I will not burden you with the trouble of thanks. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ayyūb al-Makkī said: Abū Ayyūb al-Makkī sent one of his sons to ʿImārah b. Ḥamzah, and the chamberlain admitted him. He said: Then he brought me near to a curtain that was let down and said: Enter. I entered, and there he was, lying on his side with his face turned to the wall. The chamberlain said to me: Greet. I greeted, but he did not return my greeting. The chamberlain said: Mention your need. I said: Perhaps he is asleep. He said: No, mention your need. I said to him: May God make me your ransom, your brother sends you greetings of peace and mentions a debt, and says: It has oppressed me and covered my face. Were it not for it, I would have been in the place of my messenger, asking the Commander of the Faithful to settle it. He said: And how much is your father's debt? I said: Three hundred thousand. He said: And for something like this I should speak to the Commander of the Faithful? Boy, carry it with him. He did not turn to me nor speak to me other than this. Ibn Saʿīd said: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān al-Hāshimī narrated to us, saying: Muḥammad b. Salāmah narrated to me, saying: Al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ narrated to us, saying: My father used to command me to keep the company of ʿImārah b. Ḥamzah. He said: ʿImārah fell ill, and al-Mahdī had a bad opinion of him. One day my father said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, your client ʿImārah is ill, and his affair has led him to selling his furnishings and clothing. He said: I have been heedless of him, and I did not think that he had reached this state. Carry to him five hundred thousand dirhams, O Rabīʿ, and inform him that he has with me after it what he loves. He said: So my father carried it that very hour and said: Go with it to your uncle and tell him: Your brother sends you greetings of peace and says: I reminded the Commander of the Faithful of your affair, and he apologized for his heedlessness of you and ordered these dirhams for you, and said: You have with me after it what you love. He said: I went to him while his face was turned to the wall. I greeted, and he said to me: Who are you? I said: The son of your brother, al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ. He said: Welcome. I conveyed the message, and he said: Your keeping company with us has been long, and we had wished to reward you for that, but it was not possible for us before this time. Take it away, for it is yours. He said: I was in awe of him to refuse him, so I left the mules at his door and went to my father and informed him of the news. He said: O my son, take it, may God bless you in it. ʿImārah is not one to be opposed. It was the first wealth I possessed. 1095 - Hishām b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muʿāwiyah b. Khudayj, Abū Ṭālib al-Tujībī. He heard Mālik b. Anas and sat with Ibn Wahb. He was noble and generous. He held the governorship of Barqah in the land of Egypt and held the police of Fusṭāṭ Miṣr. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. 1096 - Yūsuf b. Asbāṭ, Abū Muḥammad. From a village called Sīḥ. He used to say: Asbāṭ says: I desire [to] die while I own no dirham, have no flesh on my bones, and owe no debt. That was granted to him. During his illness he prepared something for ten dirhams, set aside one dirham of it for his embalming, spent the rest, and died. Al-Rabīʿ b. Nāfiʿ said: I heard from Yūsuf b. Asbāṭ a word on scrupulousness more excellent than any I have heard. One day I said to him, after he had taken up beekeeping: Would that you took up pigeons. He said: Bees are dearer to me than pigeons. Strangers enter among pigeons, but bees do not allow strangers among them. For that reason I took up bees.
