Translation
✧ Then the year two hundred began. Mention of the flight of Abū al-Sarāyā In this year Abū al-Sarāyā fled from al-Kūfah, where Harthamah had besieged him and those with him. He kept up the fight against them until they grew weary and abandoned the fighting. When Abū al-Sarāyā saw that, he prepared to leave al-Kūfah. He departed with eight hundred horsemen, and with him was Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Zayd. Harthamah entered it and granted safety to its people, and did not molest them. His flight was on the sixteenth of al-Muḥarram. He came to al-Qādisiyyah, and from there he traveled to al-Sūs in Khūzistān. He encountered wealth that had been carried from al-Ahwāz, seized it, and distributed it among his companions. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-Maʾmūnī came to him and ordered him to leave his jurisdiction, being reluctant to fight him, but Abū al-Sarāyā refused anything but fighting him. So he fought him, and al-Maʾmūnī defeated him and wounded him, and his companions scattered. He, Muḥammad b. Muḥammad, and Abū al-Shawk traveled toward Abū al-Sarāyā's dwelling at Raʾs ʿAyn. When they reached Jalūlāʾ, Ḥammād al-Kundughūsh seized them and brought them to al-Ḥasan b. Sahl, who was at al-Nahrawān. He killed Abū al-Sarāyā and sent his head to al-Maʾmūn. His body was set up on the bridge of Baghdādh, and Muḥammad b. Muḥammad was sent to al-Maʾmūn. As for Harthamah, he stayed in al-Kūfah one day and returned, leaving as his deputy there Ghassān b. Abī al-Faraj, Abū Ibrāhīm b. Ghassān, the commander of the guard of the governor of Khurāsān. ʿAlī b. Saʿīd traveled to al-Baṣrah and took it from the ʿAlawīs. Zayd b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī ﷺ —he is the one called Zayd al-Nār (Zayd of the Fire), and he was only called that because of the many houses of the ʿAbbāsīs and their followers that he burned in al-Baṣrah. Whenever a man of the Musawwidah came to him, he burned him. He took much wealth from the wealth of the merchants besides the wealth of the Banū al-ʿAbbās. When ʿAlī reached al-Baṣrah, Zayd sought safety from him, so he granted him safety and took him. He sent an army to Makkah, al-Madīnah, and al-Yaman, ordering them to fight the ʿAlawīs who were there. Between the rising of Abū al-Sarāyā and his killing was ten months.
