ذِكْرُ قُوَّةِ نَصْرِ بْنِ شَبَثٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ وَفِيهَا قَوِيَ أَمْرُ نَصْرِ بْنِ شَبَثٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ بِالْجَزِيرَةِ وَكَثُرَ جَمْعُهُ، وَحَصَرَ حَرَّانَ، وَأَتَاهُ نَفَرٌ مِنْ شِيعَةِ الطَّالِبِيِّينَ فَقَالُوا لَهُ: قَدْ وَتَرْتَ بَنِي الْعَبَّاسِ، وَقَتَلْتَ رِجَالَهُمْ، وَأَعْلَقْتَ عَنْهُمُ الْعَرَبَ، فَلَوْ بَايَعْتَ لِخَلِيفَةٍ كَانَ أَقْوَى لِأَمْرِكَ. فَقَالَ: مِنْ أَيِّ النَّاسِ ؟ فَقَالُوا: نُبَايِعُ آلَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، فَقَالَ: أُبَايِعُ [ بَعْضَ ] أَوْلَادِ السَّوْدَاوَاتِ، فَيَقُولُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ خَلَقَنِي وَرَزَقَنِي ؟ قَالُوا: فَنُبَايِعُ لِبَعْضِ بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ، فَقَالَ: أُولَئِكَ قَدْ أَدْبَرَ أَمْرُهُمْ، وَالْمُدْبِرُ لَا يُقْبِلُ أَبَدًا، وَلَوْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مُدْبِرٌ لَأَعْدَانِي إِدْبَارُهُ، وَإِنَّمَا هَوَايَ فِي بَنِي الْعَبَّاسِ، وَإِنَّمَا حَارَبْتُهُمْ مُحَامَاةً عَلَى الْعَرَبِ لِأَنَّهُمْ يُقَدِّمُونَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَجَمَ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the strength of Naṣr b. Shabath al-ʿUqaylī In this year the affair of Naṣr b. Shabath al-ʿUqaylī became strong in the Jazīrah, and his gathering increased. He besieged Ḥarrān, and a group of the Shīʿah of the Ṭālibiyyīn came to him and said to him: “You have made the Banū al-ʿAbbās your enemies, killed their men, and turned the Arabs against them. If you would give allegiance to a caliph, it would be stronger for your affair.” He said: “From which people?” They said: “We shall give allegiance to the family of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib.” He said: “Should I give allegiance to one of the sons of the black women, so that he says: ‘He is the one who created me and provides for me’?” They said: “Then we shall give allegiance to one of the Banū Umayyah.” He said: “Those, their affair has turned away, and the one who turns away never comes back. If a man who is turning away greeted me, his turning away would infect me. My inclination is only toward the Banū al-ʿAbbās, and I fought against them only in defense of the Arabs, because they prefer the non-Arabs over them.”
