Translation
✧ Mention of the opposition of Naṣr b. Shabath al-ʿUqaylī to al-Maʾmūn In this year Naṣr b. Sayyār b. Shabath al-ʿUqaylī openly opposed al-Maʾmūn. Naṣr was of the Banū ʿUqayl and lived in Kaysūm, a district north of Aleppo. He had sworn allegiance to al-Amīn and was partial to him. When al-Amīn was killed, Naṣr displayed anger at that, seized control of the lands adjacent to him, and took Sumaysāṭ. A great number of Bedouin and opportunists gathered around him, his spirit grew strong, and he crossed the Euphrates to the eastern bank, entertaining thoughts of seizing it. When people saw that from him, his crowds multiplied and increased beyond what they had been. Of his affair was what we shall mention, God—exalted—willing. (Shabath: with fatḥah on the dotted shīn, the undotted bāʾ, and the three-dotted thāʾ).
