Translation

✧ Mention of the soldiers' uprising against Ṭāhir In this year, the soldiers rose up against Ṭāhir five days after the killing of al-Amīn. The reason for that was that they demanded money from him, but he had nothing with him, so they revolted against him, and the matter became difficult for him. He thought that this was due to collusion between the soldiers and the people of the quarters, and that they were with them against him, but none of the people of the quarters moved. He feared for his life, so he fled, and they looted some of his belongings. He went to ʿAqraqūf. When al-Amīn had been killed, he had ordered the gates to be guarded and had moved Zubaydah, the mother of al-Amīn, and her two sons, Mūsā and ʿAbd Allāh, with her, and he transported them in a ḥarrāqah to Humayniyā on the upper Zāb. Then he ordered that Mūsā and ʿAbd Allāh be taken to their uncle al-Maʾmūn in Khurāsān. When the soldiers rose up against him, they called out, "Mūsā, O Manṣūr!" and they continued that for their day and the next. The people deemed it right that Ṭāhir should send out the two sons of al-Amīn. When Ṭāhir fled to ʿAqraqūf, a group of commanders went out with him, and he prepared to fight the soldiers and the people of the quarters in Baghdād. When that news reached the commanders who had stayed behind and the notables of the city, they went out and apologized, blaming the foolish and the youths, and they asked him to pardon them and accept their excuse. Ṭāhir said: "I did not leave you except to put the sword among you. I swear by God, the Almighty, the Majestic—mighty and glorified be He—that if you return to the like of this, I will indeed return to my intention against you and bring upon you what you dislike!" Thus he broke them with that, and he ordered for them the pay of four months. A group of the elders of the people of Baghdād went out to him, including ʿUmayrah Abū Shaykh b. ʿUmayrah al-Asadī. They swore to him that no one from the people of Baghdād or from the abnāʾ had moved, and they vouched for those behind them. So his anger subsided, and he pardoned them. The war laid down its burdens, and the people in the east and the west became united in obedience to al-Maʾmūn and submission to his caliphate. .
