Translation

✧ Mention of the rebellion of the people of Mārida and al-Ḥakam’s campaign against the land of the Franks In this year, the people of Mārida renewed their opposition to al-Ḥakam b. Hishām, the amīr of al-Andalus, and rebelled against him. He marched against them in person and fought them. His raiding parties and armies continued to go back and forth and fight them during this year, the year 195, and the year 196. The Franks coveted the Muslims’ frontier regions and attacked them with raiding, killing, plunder, and captivity. Al-Ḥakam was occupied with the people of Mārida and did not have time for the Franks. News reached him of the severity of the situation for the people of the frontier and what the enemy had done to them. He heard that a Muslim woman had been taken captive and called out, “O al-Ḥakam, come to my aid!” The matter weighed heavily on him. He gathered his army, prepared, mustered his forces, and marched to the land of the Franks in the year 196. He wrought havoc in their lands, conquered several fortresses, devastated the country, plundered it, killed the men, took the women captive, and seized the wealth. He made for the area where that woman was. He ordered that prisoners be given to them with which they might ransom their captives. He gave emphatic instructions to secure the release of that woman. She was freed from captivity, and he killed the remaining prisoners. When he had finished his campaign, he said to the people of the frontiers, “Did al-Ḥakam come to your aid?” They said, “Yes.” They prayed for him and praised him greatly. He returned to Córdoba victorious.
