Ibn al-Jawzī said: ʿAlī b. Ḥajar claimed that ʿUlayya was his maternal grandmother. Ismāʿīl used to say: Whoever says Ibn ʿUlayya has slandered me. Except that this became widespread and he became known by it. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: I missed Mālik, so God compensated me with Sufyān b. ʿUyayna, and I missed Ḥammād b. Zayd, so God compensated me with Ismāʿīl b. ʿUlayya. Shuʿba said: Ibn ʿUlayya is the master of the muḥaddithūn. From ʿAmr b. Zāʾida, he said: I accompanied Ibn ʿUlayya for thirteen years; I never saw him smile during them. From Ḥammād b. Salama and Ḥammād b. Zayd: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak used to trade in cloth, and he used to say: Were it not for five, I would not trade. It was said to him: O Abū Muḥammad, who are the five? He said: Sufyān al-Thawrī, Sufyān b. ʿUyayna, al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ, Muḥammad b. al-Sammāk, and Ibn ʿUlayya. He used to go out to Khurāsān and trade, and whatever he profited from anything, he took the sustenance for his family and the expenses of the ḥajj, and the remainder he gave to his five brothers. He said: He arrived one year, and it was said to him: Ibn ʿUlayya has been appointed to the judiciary. So he did not come to him and did not give him the purse that he used to give him every year. It reached Ibn ʿUlayya that Ibn al-Mubārak had arrived, so he rode to him, but ʿAbd Allāh did not raise his head to him and did not speak to him, so he departed. When it was the next day, he wrote him a note in which was: In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. May God make you happy in His obedience, take charge of you with His protection, and guard you with His guarding. I had been awaiting your kindness and your gift, seeking blessing through it, and I came to you yesterday, but you did not speak to me, and I saw you angry with me. What thing have you seen from me that I should apologize to you for? When the note reached ʿAbd Allāh, he called for the inkwell and paper and said: This man refuses anything but that we split the staff for him. Then he wrote to him: O you who made religion a falcon for him, hunting the wealth of the poor, you schemed for this world and its pleasures with a scheme that does away with religion. You became mad for it after you were a cure for the mad. Where are your narrations, in their chain, from Ibn ʿAwn and Ibn Sīrīn? Where are your narrations and the saying about entering the doors of rulers? If you say you were compelled, that is false; the donkey of knowledge has slipped in the mud. When Ibn ʿUlayya read the verses, he rose from the seat of judgment, stepped on Hārūn's carpet, and said: O Commander of the Faithful, God, God, have mercy on my old age, for I cannot bear error. Hārūn said to him: Perhaps this madman has incited your heart. He said to him: God, God, may God save you. So he excused him from the judiciary. When that reached ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak, he sent him the purse. Ibn ʿUlayya died in Dhū al-Qaʿda of this year and was buried in the cemeteries of ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik. Muḥammad b. Abī ʿArūba; he sat with Shuʿba for about twenty years, and he heard from a group besides the two of them. He was an imam, thiqah; both Ṣaḥīḥs transmit from him. He had soundness of heart. From Sulaymān b. Ayyūb, the companion of al-Baṣrī, he said: It was said to Ghundar: The people magnify the soundness that is in you. He said: They lie. He said: I said: Then tell me something true of it. He said: I fasted one day and ate three times out of forgetfulness; then I remembered that I was fasting; then I forgot, so I repeated; then a third time; then I completed my fast. Ibn al-Marzubān said: With his chain from Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, he said: Ghundar bought fish one day and said to his family: Prepare it. And he slept. His dependents ate the fish and smeared his hand. When he awoke, he said: Bring the fish. They said: You have eaten. He said: No. They said: Then smell your hand. He did, and said: You are right, but I am not full. Al-Bukhārī said in his Taʾrīkh: He died in Dhū al-Qaʿda in the year 193. Ibn Saʿd mentioned in al-Ṭabaqāt that he died in al-Baṣra in the year 194. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: It has happened in the names of the muḥaddithūn that the names of a group are Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, and they were nicknamed Ghundar in imitation of this man. Among them: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Darān b. Sulaymān, Abū al-Ṭayyib. He died in the year 357. His mention will come in the years. He said: I came to al-Aʿmash, and he said to me: Your grandfather Asmāʾ once distributed a distribution and forgot a neighbor of his; then he was ashamed to give him after he had begun with another before him, so he sent to him and poured the wealth upon him in a pouring. Marwān had moved to Damascus and settled there, and he came to Baghdad and narrated in it. From him narrated Qutayba, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā, Abū Khaythama, and Ibn Rāhawayh. Then he returned to Makkah. He was thiqah, except that he used to narrate from weak narrators and conceal them. From Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān, he said: I heard Mahdī b. Abī Mahdī say: In the character of al-Fazārī there was harshness, and he had many dependents and severe need. The people used to be kind to him, and when a man was kind to him, as long as that kindness remained in his house, one would see expansiveness toward the man. He said: I considered and did not find anything that lasts longer in a man's house than vinegar, nor anything cheaper than it in Makkah. So I used to buy a jar of vinegar and give it to him as a gift, and I would see its effect on him. When it ran out, I would see that in him, and I would ask the slave girl: Has your vinegar run out? She would say: Yes. So I would buy a jar and give it to him as a gift, and he would return to his former state. He died in Makkah one day before the Tarwiya of this year. 1061 Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh b. From Dalawayh, he said: I heard ʿAlī — meaning Ibn Muḥammad, the son of the sister of Yaʿlā b. ʿUbayd — say: Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh remained for twenty years with water having descended into one of his eyes without his family knowing it.
