Translation
✧ The Caliphate of al-Amīn Muḥammad al-Amīn b. Hārūn al-Rashīd b. Muḥammad al-Mahdī b. Abī Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr When al-Rashīd died at Ṭūs in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year, that is the year 193, Ṣāliḥ b. al-Rashīd wrote to his brother, the heir apparent after their father, Muḥammad b. al-Rashīd, who was given the title al-Amīn, and he was the son of Zubaydah, informing him in Baghdād of their father's death and consoling him. When the letter arrived in the company of the servant Rajāʾ, carrying the seal, the staff, and the cloak, on Thursday the fourteenth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, al-Amīn rode from his palace at al-Khuld to the palace of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, which is called the Palace of Gold, on the bank of Baghdād. That was Friday, the middle of Jumādā. He prayed with the people, then ascended the pulpit and delivered a sermon, consoling them for al-Rashīd, expanding the people's hopes, and promising them good. The elites of his people and the leading commanders pledged allegiance to him, and he ordered the disbursement of the soldiers' stipends for two years. He descended and commanded his uncle Sulaymān b. Abī Jaʿfar to receive the pledge of allegiance from the rest of the people. He took al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ as vizier, his son al-ʿAbbās b. al-Faḍl as chamberlain, and appointed Ismāʿīl b. Ṣubayḥ as secretary, placing him over the bureau of correspondence, decrees, and the seal. He appointed ʿĪsā b. ʿAlī b. Māhān over the police, and it is said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥāzim. From Aḥmad b. Yūsuf, who said: Abū Nuwās entered upon Muḥammad al-Amīn, congratulating him on the caliphate and consoling him for al-Rashīd in a single line, and he began to recite: Jarā jawārin bi-l-saʿdi wa-l-naḥsi fa-naḥnu fī waḥshatin wa-fī unsin al-ʿaynu tabkī wa-l-sinnu ḍāḥikatun fa-naḥnu fī maʾtamin wa-fī ʿursin yuḍḥikuhā al-qāʾimu al-amīnu wa-yubkīhā wafātu al-Rashīdi bi-l-amsi badrāni: badrun aḍḥā bi-Baghdāda fī al-khuldi wa-badrun bi-Ṭawsin fī al-ramsi When the affair of al-Amīn was established in Baghdād and his situation there became stable, his brother al-Maʾmūn envied him, and discord occurred.
