Translation

✧ In the year one hundred and ninety-three AH, Saʿīd al-Jawharī died. He said: In it, al-Rashīd reached Jurjān, and the treasuries of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā arrived to him, carried on one thousand five hundred camels, and that was in Ṣafar of it. Then he moved from it to Ṭūs while he was ill, and he remained there until his death occurred in it. In it, Harthama, the governor of Iraq, and Rāfiʿ b. al-Layth clashed, and Harthama defeated him, conquered Bukhārā, and captured his brother Bashīr b. al-Layth. He sent him to al-Rashīd while he was at Ṭūs, too ill to travel. When he was made to stand before him, he began to soften toward him, but he did not accept it from him; rather, he said: "By God, if there remained of my life only enough to move my lips to kill you, I would kill you." Then he summoned a butcher, and he cut him into fourteen pieces before him. Then al-Rashīd raised his hands to the sky, supplicating God to enable him against Rāfiʿ as He had enabled him against his brother Bashīr. In this year Niqfūr, king of the Byzantines, died; the Bulgars killed him. His reign had lasted seven years, and after him his son Istibrāq remained for two months and then died, so Mīkhāʾīl, the husband of Niqfūr's sister, ruled them; may God curse them. In it, Harthama b. Aʿyan, the governor of Khurāsān, and Rāfiʿ b. al-Layth clashed, and Rāfiʿ sought help from the Turks; then they fled and Rāfiʿ remained alone, so his affair weakened. In this year, the governor of the Hijaz, Dāwūd b. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, led the people in the pilgrimage. In it, al-Amīn dismissed his brother al-Qāsim al-Muʾtaman from al-Jazīra, but confirmed him over Qinnasrīn and al-ʿAwāṣim, and appointed Khuzayma b. Khāzim over al-Jazīra. In this year, in Shaʿbān of it, Zubayda arrived from al-Raqqa with the treasuries and what she had of gifts and garments, and her son al-Amīn met her as far as al-Anbār, accompanied by the notables of the people.
