Translation
✧ In the year one hundred and ninety-one, Yazīd b. Makhlad al-Hubayrī raided the lands of the Romans with ten thousand men. The Romans seized the mountain pass against him and killed him along with fifty of his companions at two stages from Ṭarsūs; the rest fled. Al-Rashīd appointed Harthama b. Aʿyan to command the summer expedition, attaching to him thirty thousand men, among them Masrūr the eunuch, who was in charge of expenditures. Al-Rashīd went out to al-Ḥadath to be close to them. He ordered the destruction of churches in the frontier fortresses and compelled the protected non-Muslims to distinguish their clothing and appearance in Baghdad and other cities. He ordered Harthama to build Ṭarsūs and make it a garrison city, and he did so. Faraj the eunuch took charge of that by al-Rashīd’s command. He dispatched to it a force of three thousand from the people of Khurasan, then sent to them a thousand from the people of al-Maṣṣīṣa and a thousand from the people of Antioch. Its construction was completed in the year one hundred and ninety-two, and he built its mosque.
