The year 190 AH
Translation
✧ In the year one hundred and ninety: Al-Rashīd came from al-Rayy, and he came to al-Raqqah. He began with Umm Jaʿfar and spent the day with her, and on the morrow he ordered for her six million dirhams, chests of silk brocade, baskets of saffron, and rare gifts from what ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Māhān had sent him as a present. From al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, who said: My uncle Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd Allāh related to me, saying: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ẓabyān was the judge of al-Raqqah, and al-Rashīd was then there. A man came to him and sought his aid against ʿĪsā b. Jaʿfar, so Ibn Ẓabyān wrote to him: To proceed: May God preserve the emir, protect him, and complete His favors upon him. A man came to me and mentioned that he is So-and-so son of So-and-so, and that he has a claim against the emir—may God preserve him—of five hundred thousand dirhams. If the emir—may God preserve him—sees fit to attend the court session himself, or to appoint an agent to argue with his adversary, let him do so. He handed the letter to the man, who went to ʿĪsā's gate and gave the letter to his chamberlain, who conveyed it to him. He said to him: Tell him: Eat this entire letter. He returned to the judge and informed him, so he wrote to him: May God preserve you and protect you, and grant enjoyment through you. A man called So-and-so son of So-and-so has appeared, and he mentioned that he has a claim against you of five hundred thousand dirhams. Come with him to the court session, or send your agent, God willing. He dispatched the letter with two of his assistants. They presented themselves at ʿĪsā's gate and delivered the letter to him. He became angry and threw it away. They left and informed him, so he wrote to him: May God protect you and preserve you, and grant enjoyment through you. You must come, you and your adversary, to the court session. If you refuse, I shall refer your matter to the Commander of the Faithful. Then he dispatched the letter with two of his companions. They sat at ʿĪsā's gate until he came out. They rose to him and handed him the judge's letter, but he did not read it and threw it away. They reported back to him, so he sealed his document box, departed, and sat in his house. The news reached al-Rashīd, who summoned him and asked him about his affair. He informed him of the story word for word. So he said to Ibrāhīm b. ʿUthmān: Go to the gate of ʿĪsā b. Jaʿfar and seal all his doors. Let no one leave from them and let no one enter to him until he pays the man his due or comes with him to the court session. Ibrāhīm surrounded his residence with fifty horsemen, and his doors were locked. Ibn ʿĪsā thought that something had happened to al-Rashīd regarding his execution, and he did not know the reason for that. He began speaking to the assistants from behind the door, and cries rose from his house with the wailing of women. He ordered them to be silent. He said to one of Ibrāhīm's servants: Call Abū Isḥāq for me so that I may speak to him. They informed him of what he said, so he came until he reached the door. ʿĪsā said to him: What is our situation? He informed him of the news of Ibn Ẓabyān. So he ordered that five hundred thousand dirhams be brought immediately and handed to the man. Ibrāhīm went to al-Rashīd and informed him, and he said: When the man has received his money, open his doors for him.
