✧ Mention of the agreement between al-Ḥakam, ruler of al-Andalus, and his paternal uncle ʿAbd Allāh In the year one hundred and eighty-six, al-Ḥakam b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the amir of al-Andalus, and his paternal uncle ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Balansī came to an agreement. The reason for this was that when ʿAbd Allāh heard of the killing of his brother Sulaymān, it weighed heavily upon him, and he feared for his own life. He remained in Balansiya and did not leave it, and he did not move to stir up any discord. He sent to al-Ḥakam seeking a peace settlement and entry into his obedience. It is also said: Rather, al-Ḥakam sent messengers to him, and wrote to him offering peace, guaranteeing him safety, and granting him and his children ample allowances. ʿAbd Allāh responded by agreeing to the accord, and the arrangement between them was settled through the efforts of Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā, the companion of Mālik, and other scholars. Al-Ḥakam married his sisters to the sons of his uncle ʿAbd Allāh, and ʿAbd Allāh traveled to him, whereupon al-Ḥakam honored him, exalted his standing, and granted him and his children ample allowances and noble gifts. It is also said: The correspondence concerning the peace took place in this year, and the peace was finalized in the year one hundred and eighty-seven.
