Translation
✧ In the year one hundred eighty-five AH, Yazīd b. Mazyad b. Zāʾidah al-Shaybānī—he is the nephew of Maʿn b. Zāʾidah—died in the city of Bardhaʿah, and Asad b. Yazīd took his place as governor. Yazīd was highly praised, generous, and noble, and poets composed many elegies for him. Among the finest elegies is what Abū Muḥammad al-Tamīmī said in mourning him, which I have recorded for its excellence: Is it true that Yazīd has perished? Make clear, O you who announce and proclaim. Do you know whom you have mourned, and how your lips uttered it? With it the dust would be satisfied. Has the defender of glory and Islam perished? Woe to you, why does the earth not quake? Observe: do you see Islam's pillars leaning? Has al-Walīd grown old? Have the swords of Banū Nizār wavered? Have the horse-cloths been removed from the steeds? Do the rain-clouds' nursing camels water the lands with their abundance? Does the branch ever become green? Was not Nizār demolished by his fall? Indeed! And towering glory collapsed. [And when his grave received him, it received the newly acquired glory and the ancient lineage.] By God, my eye will never cease to shed tears for you, ever. If the tears of a base man of a people freeze, the tears of one of noble descent will not freeze. After Yazīd, will the weeping women store away tears, or will their cheeks be spared? Let the dome of Islam weep for you, when its ropes gave way and its pillar broke. And let a poet weep for you, whom time has left no lineage, and whose poetry has lost its market. Who will summon the Imam for every calamity that befalls and every difficulty that weighs down? Who will protect the army when the valiant hero is baffled by a ruse of his own self? If Yazīd perishes, then every living being is prey to fate or hunted down. Do you not wonder at him? The fates slew him while they were his soldiers. They sought him out, but they used to turn aside from him whenever war's fire blazed. Rabīʿah has been consoled that a day like your day will never return upon it. Al-Rashīd, when he heard this elegy, would weep, and he deemed it excellent and admired it. [Deaths]
