✧ The appointment of Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab as governor of Ifrīqiyyah When the situation became settled for Muḥammad b. Muqātil in the lands of Ifrīqiyyah, and Tammām obeyed him, the people of the lands disliked that, and they incited Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab to write to al-Rashīd seeking from him the governorship of Ifrīqiyyah, so he wrote that to him. And upon the lands of Egypt there was every year a hundred thousand dinars carried to Ifrīqiyyah as assistance, so Ibrāhīm relinquished that, and he offered to carry every year forty thousand dinars, so al-Rashīd summoned his trusted men and consulted them (concerning whom he should appoint over) Ifrīqiyyah, and he mentioned to them the dislike of its people for the governorship of Muḥammad b. Muqātil. Harthamah indicated Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab, and he mentioned to him what he had seen of his intelligence, his religion, and his competence, and that he had undertaken the protection of Ifrīqiyyah from Ibn Muqātil, so al-Rashīd appointed him in al-Muḥarram of the year one hundred and eighty-four, and evil was suppressed, and he controlled the affair, and he sent Tammām and everyone who would leap upon the governors to al-Rashīd, so the lands became calm, and he built a city which he named al-ʿAbbāsiyyah near al-Qayrawān, and he moved to it with his family and his slaves. And there rebelled against him, in the year one hundred and eighty-six, a man from the sons of the Arabs in the city of Tunis, whose name was Ḥamdīs, and he removed the black (ʿAbbāsid) garments, and his gathering grew large, so Ibn al-Aghlab sent against him ʿImrān b. Makhlad with many armies, and he commanded him not to spare anyone of them if he got hold of them. So ʿImrān marched, and they met and fought, and the companions of Ḥamdīs began to say: Baghdad! Baghdad! And the two parties stood firm, then Ḥamdīs and those with him were defeated, and the sword took them, and ten thousand men were killed among them, and ʿImrān entered Tunis. Then it reached Ibn al-Aghlab that Idrīs b. Idrīs al-ʿAlawī had grown numerous in gathering in the farthest parts of the Maghrib, so he wanted to aim for him, but his companions forbade him and said: Leave him as long as he leaves you, so employ stratagem, and write to the one managing his affair among the Maghribis, whose name was Bahlūl b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, and give gifts to him, and he did not cease with him until he parted from Idrīs and obeyed Ibrāhīm, and the gathering of Idrīs dispersed, so he wrote to Ibrāhīm seeking to soften him, and asking him to refrain from his region, and mentioning to him his kinship to the Messenger of God ﷺ, so he refrained from him. Then ʿImrān b. Makhlad, and he was among the close associates of Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab, and he would lodge with him in his palace, rode one day with Ibrāhīm and began to converse with him, but he understood nothing of his talk because his heart was occupied with an important matter he had, so he requested the talk again from ʿImrān, and he became angry and parted from Ibrāhīm, and gathered a great gathering, and revolted against him, and he camped between al-Qayrawān and al-ʿAbbāsiyyah, and al-Qayrawān and most of the lands of Ifrīqiyyah came to be with him. So Ibrāhīm dug a trench around al-ʿAbbāsiyyah, and he held out in it, and the war between them lasted a full year, so al-Rashīd heard the news, and he dispatched to Ibrāhīm a storehouse of money, so when the funds reached him, he ordered a crier to announce: Whoever is of the army of the Commander of the Faithful, let him come to take the stipend. So the companions of ʿImrān left him and dispersed from him, and the companions of Ibrāhīm fell upon them, and they were defeated, and Ibrāhīm proclaimed amnesty and attendance to receive the stipend, so they came, and he gave them, and he tore down the gates of al-Qayrawān and demolished part of its wall. As for ʿImrān, he traveled until he reached al-Zāb, and he stayed there until Ibrāhīm died and his son ʿAbd Allāh succeeded him, and he granted amnesty to ʿImrān, so he came to him, and he lodged him with him, and it was said to ʿAbd Allāh: This one seeks vengeance for your father, and we do not trust him for you, so he killed him. And when ʿImrān was defeated, evil subsided in Ifrīqiyyah, and the people were safe, and it remained thus until Ibrāhīm died in Shawwāl of the year one hundred and ninety-six, and his age was fifty-six years, and his emirate was twelve years, four months, and ten days.
