✧ The governorship of Muhammad b. Muqatil over Ifriqiya In the year one hundred and eighty-one, al-Rashid appointed Muhammad b. Muqatil b. Hakim al-ʿAkki over Ifriqiya, when Harthama b. Aʿyan sought to be relieved of it, as we have mentioned, in the year one hundred and seventy-seven. This Muhammad was the foster-brother of al-Rashid. He arrived in al-Qayrawan at the beginning of Ramadan, took charge of it, and Harthama returned to al-Rashid. When he settled there, his conduct was not praiseworthy, so the troops disagreed over him and agreed to give precedence to Makhlad b. Murra al-Azdi. (Many of the troops, the Berbers, and others gathered, so Muhammad b. Muqatil sent an army against them, and they fought him. Makhlad was defeated and hid in a mosque, but he was seized and slaughtered.) Tammam b. Tamim rose against him in Tunis with a large gathering, and they marched to al-Qayrawan in Ramadan of the year one hundred and eighty-three. Muhammad b. Muqatil al-ʿAkki went out against him with those who were with him, (and they fought at Munyat al-Khayl). Ibn al-ʿAkki was defeated and fled to al-Qayrawan, and Tammam marched and entered al-Qayrawan and granted safety to Ibn al-ʿAkki, on condition that he leave Ifriqiya. So he marched in Ramadan to Tripoli. Ibrahim b. al-Aghlab al-Tamimi gathered a large force and marched to al-Qayrawan, disapproving of what Tammam had done. When he approached it, Tammam moved away from it to Tunis [in Dhu al-Qaʿda], and Ibrahim entered al-Qayrawan. He wrote to Muhammad b. Muqatil informing him of the news and summoning him back to his post. So he returned to al-Qayrawan, and that weighed heavily on the people of the city. The news reached Tammam, so he gathered a force and marched to al-Qayrawan, thinking that the people disliked Muhammad and would help him against him. When he arrived, Ibn al-Aghlab said to Muhammad: "Tammam was defeated by me when I had few men. Now that you have reached the country, his greed has been renewed, because he knows that the troops will desert you. My view is that I and those of my companions who are with me should march and fight him." He did that, marched against him, and fought him. Tammam was defeated, a group of his companions were killed, and he fled to the city of Tunis. Ibrahim b. al-Aghlab marched against him to besiege him, but he sought a guarantee of safety from him, so he granted him safety.
